i recently started playing a lot of poker on my lunch breaks and after work on partypoker.

was losing a lot on the small table so i moved up to the 10/20 tables and am winning a lot.

one thing that i have noticed though is that there are a lot of people who work with each other, raising here and then folding, raising and reraising to get you out of the pot and like.

i am about even and am thinking about stopping playing altogether.

is there anything that can be done about this type of chicanery(SP?)

I've been told over and over again, these guys use a cell phone, IM program, and home phone to keep track of there buddies in the rooms.

Very common for 3-4 guys to be working together.

Yahoo! Poker, kinda sucks but its fun all the same.

I'd be very careful about playing poker online. An individual could get together with his buddy by cell phone and they could easily team up together. They could tell each other what their opponents have and vice versa. They could do IM as well.

yes this type of collusion happens a lot. You have to look at the hand histories but unfortunately I saw several people at the same table day over day and reported it to party poker. They did nothing then like 2 months later they email me and say they've banned the players for collusion but I get no money back so it doesn't really do me any good. My friends live in a dorm and you'd be surprised at how many college students play poker now and yes they were cheating and didn't seem to care when other people walked into the room.

That is the major tradeoff of online poker. It's conveinent but it's also easy for other to cheat. In fact I think a lot of people cheat but are beginners and don't do it very well. As a side note you should get a program called pokertracker it's legal according to all the sites but gives you basically deep info about all your opponents. It's such a huge edge it should be considered illegal but all sites have no qualms about it. The random number generator at party poker is another great debate at many poker sites.

PartyPoker has a collusion prevention program... doesn't that take care of these kind of things?

collusion is very hard to do.

True its easy to IM each other, etc....but most of the time, you don't get that much benefit out of it.

If you play in the freeroll or "mock" tournaments (I'm not sure if partypoker has these) you are usually assigned to a random table. That would probably lessen the chances of such things happening significantly.

As for sit&go stuff, just stick with the play money.

Probably not. Most great card players are great because they can read people. You can't do that very well in online poker.

It doesn't hurt, though.

If you play for real money online, yes.

infact, real life games are usually softer than their online equivalent buyin/limit counterparts.

Online poker is a good way of learning how to play when the real life thing is not available. But take into consideration you run the chance of playing alongside bots/cheaters that make winning much harder.

The prevalence of bots are kind of overstated, but if you are really worried, play no limit. Bots are much easier to write for limit poker.

more than anything, i'm just looking to gain experience seeing hands and such. i'm a n00b (probably one of my only friends who doesn't watch WSOP regularly :p), but i can usually get by with my wits and by trying to read into people's betting patterns.

If you are just starting, deposit like 25 bucks in to a pokerstar account and play their .01/.02 blinds no limit tables.

and try to build up your bankroll and move up in limits as you get more money.

a good rule is don't move up until you have 15-20 buyin bankroll.
