System specs:
Win2k sp4
512 Ram
GeForce4 Ti 4200 w/ 64 Meg RAM
AMD XP 1600
IE 5.50.4807

Problem: System is brought to its knees when Party Poker ads are at the top. Mouse is unresponsive, unable to close applications, and task manager takes about 15 seconds to pop open. Open apps like Winamp hang when the ads load up and refresh.

I *ONLY* notice this when browsing the AT forums with the Party Poker ads, especially the ones with a lot of animation.

Suggestions? Besides stop posting :(

I don't update my browser because I have some legacy apps that don't work properly with IE 6.XX.

Thanks in advance.

Perhaps install Mozilla FireFox and use that to surf and then just use IE 5.5 for all your legacy apps?

If you download Mozilla Firefox and disable the display of off-site images you won't see 90% of the banner ads on the Internet.

First it was religious reasons, and now it's because people's computers are too slow for the ads. I dunno. They're big and they're flashy, but I try to ignore them. At least they're not pop-ups.

I know it's not the latest and greatest, but I'd hardly consider my machine...*gasp*...slow.

I have to concur with those suggesting upgrading to a modern browser like Firefox. It handles everything that I've been able to throw at it with relative ease. I also suggest going with WebWasher or the Mozilla/Firefox AdBlock extension for filtering out advertisements, works like a charm. You might also consider upgrading your Java and Flash plugins/ActiveX controls, I have a feeling that they are what are really causing the slowdowns on your system.

I totally agree. Firefox is still in beta and needs some work but for the most part it's pretty much there. Even though it has its short comings (.net support, a "go" button, the ability to disable middle click tabbing) its still infinitely better than IE!
