So I've obtained all the parts to the new system I'm building, this is also the first PC I've built... I'm wondering if for the first time it turns on if I should have everything in the slots and connected, or if I should add them later, after the OS (Windows 98 or XP) is installed.

Motherboard: MSI K8N Neo Platinum
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 3000+
Memory: 1GB Corsair XMS PC3200
HDD: Seagate Baracuda 120GB 7,200 RPM
CD: AOpen / LiteOn (still debating which to use) CD-R/DVD Combo
Video: BFG GeForce 6800 GT

put everything in, that way windows will install drivers for your hardware you will be using and not the onboard audio/video

Put it all in and use winXP, not win98. With that video card, you will need to have xp running for DirectX support. Also games like doom3 do not support win98.

Def do ont install Win98 on that Rig, it would be a HUGE bottleneck (maybe not for performance but for usability)

I was worried about 98 not having the desired drivers and files, and then overall the performance and stability...

Is there a real big difference between XP Home and XP Pro? I do plan on getting XP 64-Bit Edition when it comes out, since I hear it'll be really good matched with the CPU and such. What do you guys think?

You can currently get an evaluation (kinda like a Beta) version of Windows XP x64 Bit, edition for free on the MS Website, i believe.

Has a few problems with select software
