Parts around AMD 3700+/X1900XT ?

Hi guys,

The PC is gonna be primarily used for GAMING/MUSIC PRODUCTION. I recently bought an AMD Athlon 64 3700+ Processor and an ATI X1900XT video card. I am trying to configure parts around CPU/GPU from newegg.com. They are as follows:-

Lian Li PC-7B plus II Black Aluminum ATX Mid Tower Computer Case - Retail - 89$

Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD2500KS 250GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM - 89$ (10$ Rebate)

Antec SmartPower 2.0 SP-500 ATX12V 500W Power Supply - Retail - 69$ (15$ Rebate)

CORSAIR XMS 2GB(2x1) DDR 400(PC 3200) Unbuffered Dual Channel - Retail - 189$ (50$ Rebate)

NEC 16X DVD±R DVD Burner Black IDE/ATAPI Model ND-3550A - OEM - 41$

Total(Without motherboard) = 501$ (Including shipping)
Total(Without motherboard, after rebates) = 426 $ (Including shipping)

Please critique! Is the power supply appropriate for the parts listed (X1900XT + AMD 3700)? Any other suggestions welcome !!

Moreover, can someone suggest a good non-SLI motherboard ? I will be overclocking at sometime in future.

Thanks,

DJ

PS - God... I am such a n00b...😕

case - nice choice! i have a PC-75 myself.
hd - good!
psu - people will recommend fortron, sparkle, PC&P, but i still think antec is completely fine. ive used their psus for years without fail.
ram - fine.
dvd-rw - have the same one except in silver. pretty damn good and it hasnt failed me yet a.k.a no coasters of any kind!

epox makes solid non-sli boards, dfi has their ultra-d mobo, and asus with their a8n series (they make non-sli versions). or you can get the ati chipset ones, like the asus a8R32-MVP.

good luck!

Look at MSI and Epox for value motherboards, and pick one that has the features your looking for. Epox is better for ocing however. HD is great but the new Samsung Spinpoints are better. Case is great, RAM should be switched to a OCZ or Patriot 2x 1GB kit, they have the best performance for the money, XMS is fairly overrated. A Enermax Liberty is better for a PSU, more reliable, modular cables, great efficency, little heat, quiet, etc.

"Is the power supply appropriate for the parts listed (X1900XT + AMD 3700)?"

Yes, you could get away with a good 450W, but don't count on it. Anything over 500W isn't nessisary unless you want dual video cards in the future. If you want crossfire in the future, a 600W liberty will satisfy that need.

why do you say the new samsung hdd are better? speed? noise? heat?

i would also have to agree that the xms series is over rated and also even if you are o/cing don't worry too much about timings on the a64 platform, just use a memory divider to get your ram to what speed it works good at.

@ all,

Thank you very much for the feedback. Someone suggested me a thermaltake matrix case, but I personally love the simple design of Lian Li and just can't make up my mind.

Can someone experienced enough with overclocking suggest me a particular model of Motherboard? I am reading a bunch of reviews on newegg.com but almost every motherboard has got problems! Some suck at overclocking, some heat up, problems with north bridge (wtf is that?), compatibility issues, restart/bios problems, etc etc etc... I am just totally puzzled of all this electronic mumbo-jumbo.

I am not planning on any SLI/Crossfire setups, so it really doesnt matter. I need a simple, overclockeable, cool motherboard with some extra slots so that I can add a MIDI card for music production (something like EMU 0404!). I am not planning to invest any extra money on any extra cooling devices, neon lights, etc etc... I just want the CPU to be in a corner and do its thing.

Thanks again everyone...yall are so helpful!!

PS - And yes, my budget is less than 100$ (120$ if its really worth it).

what m/bs are they saying are bad? most of the time make sure you have decent airflow in your case helps out a lot. i really don't care much what the newegg reviewer say, for all i know they may or may not know anything about building computer, make sure they have good airflow across the m/b, hdds, gpus, etc.

from what i have read on here, the epox boards seem to be good for o/cing. at this time i am running a gigabyte and have no issues with it o/cing good(although it is limited in the V options, i happend to get lucky and get a opty144 that does 2.5GHz on stock V 🙂). i have run msi in the past, along with foxconn(good boards but not many o/cing options)

I, too, recommend the EPoX 9NPA motherboards. I particulary suggest the 9NPA+Ultra because it is rock stable at stock settings and is a good overclocker as well. Very, very popular board here and will handle everything fine.

Also, I suggest the Antec TruePower over the SmartPower; Enermax and Fortran too.

^^ Thanks Ultralight,

I was thinking in the same line. I just read a great thread of ePox nforce4 Ultra motherboard... and It bought me!
http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview...&STARTPAGE=1&FTVAR_FORUMVIEWTMP=Linear

It is reasonably priced and has most of the features that I need. Link to newegg.com - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=13-123-236&depa=1

Regarding the powersupply, here is what I found on newegg in accord to my budget.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817104954 - Fortron - 450 W
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817103928 - Antec Truepower II 430 W
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817103459 - Enermax 420 W

Which one? Would it be enough for that x1900xt beast running on load?

Damn... it sounds like a hair dryer? lol.. I dont think I can stand that 😕

I will buy the extra cooler if I need it later on.. Thanks for the suggestion.

@ Fx, thanks man... I think its reasonably priced and has got some great reviews on newegg.

Please let me know if there are any compatibility issues before I order everything tonight 🙂...thx in advance.
