I am installing WIN2K on a new 30 GB Maxtor HD and would like opinions on the best partitioning scheme.

Hi Bigal. I guess you're new here and not too familiar with the search feature we have here. Play around with it, you'll find lot's of information on that topic, it's been covered in other posts to great detail. I am doing the same tonight, but I know what my partition scheme will be (also on a 30 gig maxtor).
4 gig for win2k (advanced server ntfs)
the remaining boot sector for Debian (divided into linux native and swap)
7 gig ntfs
10 gig fat32
and the rest fat32 for a network drive.

Of course, my point here is that this is good for ME.. but probably won't suite your needs, so you gotta be more specific. Still though, try the search feature. Good luck.

use fat32 for both and try
5-7gb for your OS drive(depending on how many programs you usually install)
25-23gb for your data drive.

I concur with Dave. 5 Gb is probably enough for your OS, plus swap file, and remember every application you install on your other partition will write a call in your WINNT and Common Programs files so you need some overhead to grow. That said, 5Gb should be plenty.

During WIN2K Setup, the disk format section seemed to only let me format 1 30GB partition, which is what I now have. Do I need Partition Magic to partition this HD without losing files?

Hi
I too recently installed WIN 2K Pro om my system. For this purpose I first partition my HDD through HDD manufcatures Disk Manager you download one from http://www.maxtor.com/Maxtorhome.htm. it is always better to have (at present) dual booitng. So first install WIN98 on your first partiton ie. at C:, then go for WIN 2K partiton on another partition. For best performance do not exceed your boot partition to 2GB, WIN 2K partition should be at least 4GB. Install programmes (For WIN98 on another partition to allow necessary system files to be copied in windows directory)
