Hi, does anyone know if I can partition a 200G HD in Win 98 to a 137 and 63 size to avoid Win98's limit?

My, Bios will support the drive, but I don't have an Intel chipset so I can't use their accelerator, and I don't want to buy the EIDE card, if I don't have to. If I need to I'll probably get WinXP

Thanks:eek:

I'd go with WinXP, its way more stable and just better than 98.

Buy this, WinXP Home OEM

YOu will be required to buy a peice of hardware with this version, but ANY hardware qualifies,
i.e. you can buy a cable of some sort for like $1

ya fat32's max partition size is like 20gb anything above that could be unstable.

As with all MS OS'es, they are only as stable as you make them to be. Loading an OS with junk software and not doing routine maintenance is just plain stupid. You wouldn't drive your car everyday without giving it an oil change every so often...

That being said... Windows 98 has the support that a 7 year old OS deserves. NONE. Even Win2000 would be a good of a step up. If you have the funds to justify getting a 200GB HD, upgrading your OS is warranted.

okay, I was stretching quite a bit when I said no support, but not as many companies are making 98 compatable drivers for their products... some companies aren't even shipping drivers with their products and assuming that windowsXP has one it can use.

And I have a 120 GB data drive as 1 FAT32 partition in my music server box. Works fine with the Win98SE I installed recently in a partition on the boot drive to play The Longest Journey and Jagged Alliance 2.

The 250 GB drives in the box are both NTFS, so I have no idea whether awatson's idea of formatting a 200 GB as 2 partitions will work.

98's support was extended by MS to 2006.

In theory Fat32 can support a 2 terrabyte partition.

Partitioning fat32 with win2k/XP disk manager, limits you to making 32gb partitions, though you can format any size if it was partitioned elsewhere.

As someone said earlier, the OS is only as stable as the user makes it.
