Partition suddenly becomes unacessible?

I just added a 20 gig maxtor hd into my system last week. I have an old asus a7v with the built in promise ATA-100 controler. Well the 20 gig hd was partitioned into 2 drives H and I, each being 10gb. I used it for about 2 weeks then the partition that i used more often drive H just started to slowly freeze up when trying to access, and now its totaly inacessible. When i try to goto drive H through my comptuer it says the drive needs to be formated...EEEEK! what happend? I have some data in there that i would like to save...but how would i do that?...Meanwhile drive I is just fine....what gives 🙁 can someone tell me what happend, and how i can salvage some of the data atleast..?

windows 2000...i used partition magic to check for errors and i found out my FAT has an error...scandisk and partion magic cant seem to fix it 🙁 i think the best way to deal with this is fdisk it :-\...i salvaged the data (mp3s) but the file names are all dos versions..eh...oh well ill use music brainz or something to fix em.

Try running chkdsk /r from recovery console, especially if you kind of have the data off already.

I salvaged the data then just used partition magic to reformat into ntfs since all the curruption problem ive had ever is related to fat32 drives...lets see how this works..heh
