Partition Question

Hello,
I have an 80GB WD HD with a single NTFS partition on it. I want to take and create a 15GB empty space on it so I can install linux, however I cannot get any program to actually resize it. I've tried Partition Magic and Partition Logic (the only two programs I can find that allow non-destrucitve resizing) and neither one works. Partition Magic locks up at around 38% total done, and then CHKDSK thankfully fixes the errors, and Partion Logic gives me an error message about being unable to read something it needs to. Thankfully I haven't lost any data, but its getting annoying. Am I just going to have to back everything up, and destructively partition it?

you should buy another hd now as you possibly might have a drive ready to fail( wdc tools ..office depot has a drive ..Maxtor 100 GB Internal Hard Drive $19.99 or so after mir

yeah, i'd love to buy a new hd. but seeing as i don't have a job its gonna be hard. and there is no office depot near me, nor will a touch a maxtor drive with a 100 foot pool.

Please, please, please, make sure you have good backups. If your drive is failing, or if the partition resize doesn't work out right, make sure you have a backup of the important stuff.

I think that the Gparted live CD may be what you want. Link is at http://gparted.sourceforge.net/livecd.php and it claims to resize NTFS. You should make backups before any partition acrobatics like you're attempting -- just in case. And second on the idea your drive could be wonky - careful...

just got done making a backup with Acronis True Image, also thinking of ordering a 250gb seagate sata drive from zipzoomfly, they're only $90 plus S&H and i can pull the money out of savings, even though i don't want to

teh gparted livecd worked great, although come to find out, ubuntu now uses a graphical installer based off their livecd (i.e. mini livecd) that has gparted on it, who knew.
