Partition Problem

I can't access the partition at all, I get this message when I run chkdsk on it

Unable to determine volume version and state. CHKDSK aborted.

I have an old data recovery program from Ontrack, I ran it and it seemed to see all the files. But the partition is over 100 gigs and I don't have enough free space to copy the files off. What I'm looking for is a proggy that can repair the partition, I'll assume since I actually saw the files intact with 2 different programs it should be fixable on a partition level. somebody told me to get testdisk *trying that now* but it didn't seem to work, reading the documentation a bit deeper to see if I needed to change a setting.
if worse comes to worse I will buy another HD to xfer the data off with the Ontrack software but I'd really like to just fix the partition if I could.

Take a look at GPARTED. I'm not sure if it will do what you need but it's free & very good. If adding some free space is what you want it will do the trick .
