partition one HD to NTFS and FAT32

Hi all,

I want to build new computer and I'm gonna use single 120GB hard drive with WINXP as operating system.
I plan to partition it into 2 partition:
30GB for OS and Software = NTFS
The rest for backup partition = FAT 32

My questions are:
1. with this setup, is it gonna jeopardise stability since one is NTFS and the other FAT32?
2. Is there any negative effect to have 2 different types of file system in one hard drive?
3. Is it better off if I just put both of them in NTFS?

Thanks for the help 🙂

As long as your system partition is NTFS, having another FAT32 partition should not jeoprodize your stability.

There are no negative effects of different file systems on the same HDD.

I don't see why you would use FAT32 unless you need to be able to read it through a different OS. NTFS many more benefits over FAT32.

I choose FAT32 for the other partition is because I'm thinking that I can put my image using norton ghost in there and also if when the system partition crash or something I still can grab the file on that partition 🙂

Do you think it's not worth it?

Yeah ghost can read NTFS (at least the Ghost that is included with Norton SystemWorks 2003). I would recommend NTFS for both because FAT32 only allows up to 4GB file size, and something with cache/cluster size that causes slowdowns with big drives (over 32GB i think). Also, no more scandisk/chkdisk when your computer is shutdown wrong because NTFS is journaled(or something like that lol)!

I dont think XP will actually allow you to format a partition over 32gb as FAT32. You would probably have to format the 2nd partiton as NTFS, which is the better option anyway.
Norton Ghost 2003 will allow you to create an image on an NTFS drive.

How you make ghost read the NTFS partition? I never be able to display the partition when I'm using ghost. 🙂
I have to have as a FAT32 then I can see it in ghost.
