Partition Magic + USB HDD = No go?

OK,

I recently bought a remote HDD enclosure (c/w 160 HDD) and connected it to my Inspiron 8200 laptop.

It worked fine for a little while, but it was divided into two partitions, so I decided to try and run Partition Magic 8.0 on it to make the entire contents of the drive into one volume. When I tried to do this, Partition Magic crapped out and gave me errors and now my laptop won't even pick up the drive when I hook it up...crap! Windows XP SP2 makes the "da-dumm" sound when I connect it, but the drive letters do not show up.

I have tried the remote HDD on another computer and it seems to work fine... what can I do to make my laptop "see" the HDD again?

I don't know about PM over USB.

But, I know that Partition Magic is really bad with merging partitions. I learned the hard way.

Now, when I want to merge two partitions, I transfer the data, in windows, from the source to the destination partition first. Then, I delete the source partition. Then, I resize the destination partition. This has worked for me many times.

If you search on Google, you will see lots of people complaining about the PM merge failures.
