I've been using it for years and years. It's a great program and I've never had any data loss/corruption from moving/resizing my data.

I'll have to go see what the difference is between Version 8 and version 6 which I currently have

Hey guys,

I have this latest version....I got it because I kept gettting the "not enough memory" error using version 6. Powerquest said verison 8 eliminates this.

Well I get the same error "not enough memory" using version 8.

Any ideas.

I have used partition magic for years and while it does only thing, create partitions, it does it amazingly well. I think I first used it about 10 years ago to create a linux partition. I think one reason to buy this is that if you converted to ntfs during an XP installation, it created 512 byte clusters. The new partition magic claims it will convert you over to faster and more efficient 4k clusters. If it can does without trashing your hard drive it is worth it.

As soon as you get it they will come out with Version 9 and want another $50. Powerquest does NOTHING for its existing customer base (I own PM 6.0 & Drive ImageXP). I upgraded to PM 6 (from 4) 2 weeks before WinXP was released and when I installed XP I found out PM 6 was worthless- PQ did nada.
No patches-no free upgrades even if you bought a previous version last week. Ahead (Nero)cares about its customers...Powerquest couldn't care less!

Yeah, in my case, after saving on cheap memory, I ended up paying in hours of lost time due to a RAM stick that could boot up but had errors on it that were not apparent. I found out by using memtest

This problem went away when I installed a new crucial RAM stick.

Bad memory also caused problems with PowerQuest Drive Image. It created a drive image file but the file itself was corrupted. As soon as I replaced the RAM stick, the problem went away on both PowerQuest products. Beware of cheap memory!!

P.S. Note that Memtest86 cannot be executed under Windows.
It needs to be loaded from a floppy disk.
Double click on install.bat to make a bootable Memtest86 floppy disk.
Note that after the boot floppy has been created you will not be able to read the floppy from Windows. This is normal.

P.P.S. Off topic, but I thought I'd also share: If your Internet Explorer crushes often with "Iexplore casued an error in <unknown>" like mine, I just discovered the cause in my case: MS Office component ctfmon.exe that loads at start up. CTRL+ALT+DEL to see if ctfmon.exe is running right now on your machine.

I don't know about version 6 or 8 but I think version 7 is awesome. I don't use it that often, but recently I've been making some major changes to my HD setups and all the operations I have executed (between 15-20 so far and I'm not done yet) have gone smoothly, even those that involved the partition with my OS. If version 8 is anything like 7, i think that this is a great deal.

I'm having a hard time finding anything worthwhile new in the new version versus old for an average user.
Except for maybe Larger partition support - "Support for partition sizes up to 160GB" it says for new version.
Look into whether there was a partition size limit in the old version if you have doubts...

Thanks,

I will try memtest. BTW, I'm using a stick of good Kingston 512 3300 DDR memory (still using 98SE). Found out about cheap memory:(

I'm gonna test it anyhoo . I was never able to re=size partitions with PM 6.0 and now the same error 3: "not enough memory".

Anyone got any other ideas?

Make sure you boot from a PM floppy prefferably creted with PartitionMagic installed on a Win98 machine.
I always use PowerQuest boot disks created on my Windows 98 laptop since creating PowerQuest bootdisks under Me, XP, 2000 works but displays error messages from time to time for me.
Finally make sure to use those qoutes " when searching Google and do Google Groups search. (Not just web)
ie: http://www.google.com/ type in:
partition magic "not enough memory"
or
partitionmagic "not enough memory"
then click on Groups

Sleefer, you have to enter a promo code to get that price. Otherwise, it's $32.95. Obviously, codes can't be mentioned here. So, always the best thing to do is check pricewatch for the best prices and special offers.

I'm pretty sure that version 7 supported 160gig partitions. I have 2x80gig in a raid array and I was able to work w/ it just fine.

Have you tried doing a scandisk and defrag on your drive(s) before using PM? Try it if you haven't.

I just started using WIN2000 a month ago and it is great. Is there any advantage to using PM 8? I would like to resize my two current partitions (done for me during the OS install by a Tech). Would I be safer using PM 8 vice WIN200 to do this resize?

I'd say average users such as yourself should go with what you already have and resize your partitions.
It's a good idea no matter what version you have to back up important data before resizing.

Watch out....

PC World's review of version 8 basically says to not buy it..."[t]his version 8 isn't a compelling upgrade".

I'll keep v7.
