Partition Keeps Deleting Itself

I am running windows 2000 server on a dell 400sc. Then I upgraded my harddrive from a 80 gig ibm to a 200 gig maxtor.

And I have re installed the os 3 times on the primary partition.

This is what happend
Every so often I will get a black screen. And when i try to get windows to look for the OS it says it cant be found. The crazy thing is that the other partitions i created are intact.

And in a sense it seems every once in while 2000 will delete the primary partition with the os.

Any thoughts
Charles

Are you running Antivirus/firewall?

If so, what?

Have you dl'd the manufacturer [of the hdd] tool, or use seagate tool to check for physical defects on the hdd

Yes I sure did. The physical drive is fine. I unistalled the anti virus and firewall. This is the most strangest problem. Could it be that the dell system doesnt like the hdd or is it software related. I having a hard time figuring this one out.

Don't suppose you have an ATA controller card around do you?

If you were to plug that in and the same thing happens, that would rule out a few things.

Otherwise, have you got a spare hdd to try temporarily? See if it happens with that.
Sometimes you just get an incompatibility with a specific piece of hw!!!!

no i sure dont. but i never thought the controller card to be faulty. hmm. but then again i had no probelms on my old hard drive.
