partition destroyed.. 70GB data lost...

i have a 100GB hard drive which was split into a 25GB and a 75GB partition. originally, the 25GB partition was used for windows, and the 75 for storage, but since i got a new hard drive, i decided to merge the 25gb and 75gb so i can use them both for storage. on the 75 gb partition was about 70gb of important data. so i used partition magic 8 to merge them. i used the merge partition wizard (ntfs file system, in win2k) and after a few hours, it was almost complete. i left the room, and when i returned, there was an error of some sort. i didnt think it would be a major error, so i let the process continue. when i got back into windows, i noticed the 75gb partition was no longer there, which was what i wanted. but i also noticed, that the 75 gb was NOT added into the 25gb partition, which WAS what i wanted. so i opened up partition magic to see what was going on, and i saw my 75GB partition labelled as 'unallocated'. i tried to 'undelete' the partition, and everything i could, but nothing would bring my data back. so, feeling defeat, i resized the 25GB partition into 100GB, thus encompassing the entire drive, and giving me the effect i wanted, sans 70GB of important data. i'm still wondering if i can recover some of that data, because it was very important and hard to replace. thanks in advance...

Welcome to Anandtech froums. Please use a little organization on that paragraph please(space)😉

I too have learned the hard way from partition magic. It is a good program but never trust your valueable data to it. I'm pretty sure your data is gone, sorry to be the berror of bad news.

im sorry, i wasn't really in the mood to worry about paragraph structure.. so anyways, i found this program called 'VirtualLab' and its supposed to allow me to recover old data. so i let it scan for a few hours, and it detected some old partitions. on one of them, guess what was there? some of my old data! but this program charges by the megabyte to restore data, AND i need to restore it to a separate drive. keep in mind, this is 70 gigs of data im trying to restore, it kind of hard to find 70 gigs of free space to put it to.. are there any other programs that could do something like this? that would be INCREDIBLE if there was something that could get my data back.. thanks

There is a "Lost&Found" program - made by the same who make PartitionMagic, you could recover some data using it. But as you already overwrited the old partition, most of the hope is gone.
I found it useful for recovering data even if no partition exists. Try to delete the 100 GB partition and run Lost and found later. You will need another hard drive to recover the data from the first hard drive

Hope that will help you
