Partioning still worth it for performance?

I havent had any luck finding any recent guides/reviews on partitioning modern hdds. All of the ones I found date at least 5 years back.

Is it still worth it to partition for performance? Aside from being a fraps'n/video editing/photoshop whore, is there any reason to partition with modern hdds?

Partitioning was done in the day of smaller hard drives with FAT16/FAT32 to reduce the overhead, which resulted in hard drive space being lost. Now that isn't an issue, so there are very few reasons to partition besides organizational purposes.

I have a small partition for my pagefile. I've always heard that is the best for performance in a 1 drive system since that small 5 gig partition won't get fragmented.

The only reason I would consider a partition is having the OS on a seperate partition in case it gets fubared then you only have to format that partition and reinstall without losing data on the other partition. Otherwise there really is no performance gain. In my system I prefer having seperate HDs rather than partitions. Thats why I have 6 of them. 🙂 But i'm sick that way.

I've heard the same. I would do that, but I have enough RAM that my pagefile barely ever gets used, so I don't even worry about it.

I agree with Oyeve. You really don't need to partition a drive anymore. It's better to get 2 drives, install you OS and apps on one and then all of your media, backups and junk to the second drive. That way you will still be able to run your OS fast.
