When I change the tranny fluid in my car, the drain plug is magnetic and collects sludge/particles. Where is this material from? The clutch packs or the gears (i hope not :Q)?

The clutchs are not metal. The steels between them are. During the normal corse of wear, metal wears away, but there should not be any large pieces of metal. Basicly anything bigger than a flake is bad. They could just be wear from the parking pawl as it latches into position.

You can wear almost a tenth of a pound of material from the clutch packs before it becomes an issue, but none of it should be magnetic.

Well, I bought the car new, and on the first tranny fluid change, there was ALOT of gunk on it. The 2nd time, almost none.
