i have a micro atx 180 watt sparkle power supply that got really hot for no reason (the fan on it still works...), and then just shut down. after it cooled, i plugged it in and my motherboard has an led on it that lights when it has the atx power connected (but not on) that was green meaning the power suppply is providing power. the power supply never turned on... ie, i pressed the power button on my computer, but it never switched on. it still showed a green lighted led... but nothing. i opened it up, and there was nothing that looked melted, burned, or fried (that i could see). of course, i'm not an electrical engineer or anything...

all i was running on the system was a matx ecs motherboard with a duron 900, geforce 2 mx, 3com 3c905tx nic, floppy, samsung dvd, and maxtor 7200 rpm 20 gig hard drive. oh, i have 1 60 or 80 mm case fan, and a 3 fan hard drive cooler that fits in a 5.25 bay... that's it. 180 watts was one of the biggest matx powersupplies i could find.

the system works perfectly, i plugging in another power supply and it runs great. when the power supply got really hot, nothing else in the system was hot, just the power supply (at least abnormally hot.), so it is the power supply and not the motherboard.

any help, suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like it's toast to me. Yes, you can have a 'partially' functioning (but not working) powersupply. It could be putting out enuf current to run that LED and nothing else, or it could be dead on one of the other voltage rails.
