As of yesterday, I've joined the ranks of the America elite, the land owners. No more paying rent to these elites, from now on I pay property taxes instead.
The house is a nice 4 year old colonial with 4 bedrooms in NJ. Figured I would let you guys know so you can expect a few home owning questions from me in the coming weeks and months.

your not elite, the government will just take it when/if it ever needs it. And how does it feel to pay tax on land that you "own" .

I almost voted YES, then I remembered the bank owns 'my' house.

Well I get to hold on to the deed, there's just a lien on it.

Well, if we want to get technical, the bank owns a Promissory Note secured by real property collateral (aka a mortgage). You own the house. Unless, that is, you've defaulted on the Promissory Note and the bank has executed their rights under said Promissory Note to execute on the collateral, and no bids were placed at the resultant auction. If THAT happened, then yes, the bank would own your house.

No one really owns their own home or land. It's really just something psychologicaly made up to make one think that they the house or land. You can pay off the house or land and if you don't pay your property taxes the town can take it from you. CYA, there goes your house.

If you really own the house then why are you still paying property tax on something you already paid off and own?

You bought a pair of shoes, tv, bed and paid tax on it and now you own it. Did you ever have to pay taxes on the shoe, tv, bed, etc.... every year. Now that is what you call really owning something.

Just a thought....

Congrats!

Now you get to pay all the other fees that go with home ownership...water, sewer, trash, HOA fees, gas, mortgage interest, etc. You'll need a lawnmower, maybe some new appliances (e.g. water softener, washer/dryer), snowblower, etc.

I'm re-mulching this week. I've been meaning to replace the master bathroom fan for a year now. I already did Weed'n'Feed, so I just sprayed Ortho all over the lawn yesterday. I want to run coax cable from the attic down to the living room. Gotta figure out the ethernet mess the last owner left. Supposed to refinish the deck this summer. The money pit never ends.

That being said, there really is nothing like owning your own home. If you're like me, then you have a lot to learn.

I'm a property owner, but I'm not "elite", so I voted no.

The idea that you have to be elite to be a property owner is just communist propaganda.

I loved that song ...

You pay taxes on your property for fire, police, schools, etc. Those are just some of the things that your property taxes can/may pay for.
