i'm not trying to ruin the movie for anybody, but i mentioned in another thread that i'd read a copy of the script and people asked for spoilers, so here they are. also, i should note that i'm a batman fan but i don't know enough about the comics to know if stuff is taken directly from them or created by the writer.
the beginning:
the movie is very much an origin story, even to the extent that we don't see him as Batman until about page 59 (1 page roughly equals 1 minute of movie time, so about an hour in). It starts with a young bruce wayne playing a game as a child at wayner manor. he slips and falls into a well, which stirs thousands of bats that swarm around. this embeds a deep fear of bats that will stay with until he's older.
an older bruce wayne awakes from this nightmare in a bhutanese jail. we don't know why yet, but this older (20s?) bruce wayne has taken to wandering the globe and has gotten himself in trouble. he gets into a fight with other prisoners and does suprisingly well. gets put in solitary. a man comes to see him. we'll later come to know him as Ra's Al Ghul. after a physical test he agrees to train bruce at his himalayan monastery. we see lots of fights/training/etc. the essence of the message ra's al ghul conveys to his to embrace his fears: "Tell us, Wayne... what do you fear?" we see a flashback to the night his parents died, the reason he's traveling the world.
more training. then flashbacks-- how bruce wanted to kill his parents' murderer, but the mugger (mr. chill?) was killed by mob boss Falcone before Wauyne got the chance. page 30, he breaks with the league of shadows because they want to destroy gotham. he wants to save it.
page 30 to page 60. the coolest part. becoming batman. as he feared bats, he nows embraces the bat and uses it as his symbol:
alfred: "and why the symbol of the bat?"
wayne: "bats frighten me." (slight smile) "And it's time my enemies shared my dread."
he gets unused prototype military stuff from a wayne industries warehouse. develops the cowl and body armor. makes batarangs. starts building the batcave. all very cool stuff.
after that... scarecrow and ra's al ghul. but i don't want to ruin too much (and i'm sick of typing...) but i will tell you there's a batmobile chase... across the rooftops!
anyway-- davod goyer is an awesome writer and i think this movie will undo all the suck from the last couple batman movies...
