Part 2: How to install XP from DOS

Post 2: Ok, now that I've got the system booting to DOS, what do I need to do to get XP Pro to install? Every time I've ever installed XP, it'd just start the install automatically when I set the CD to boot from. This system won't boot from the CD for some reason, and the most I can get from it is a command prompt. For some reason, the XP Setup.exe is a windows only file 😕 so is there any way I can initiate the install myself (without booting from the CD) through DOS?

Post 1 (thanks LiLithTecH): I'm on a system @ work and don't have access to a Win2k CD - how do I go about making a boot disk? I need a boot disk that'll just give me CD drivers and a command prompt 🙂

for part number 2... boot disks for XP 😉 You have to boot off the cd or use those floppies b/c you can't run the setup off the cd in DOS

Bah, don't download those stupid bootdisks. Just insert the win XP cdrom, and in the command prompt enter:

C:cd\winnt
i386

Before you do this, though, you should speed up the install process by first initializing smartdrv. Get smartdrv on a disk by either downloading it somewhere (not sure where), or if you have another windows machine, searching for smartdrv.exe and just putting that on the bootdisk you are using to get into the prompt. Then, before you enter the above stuff, in the A: (for floppy), type smartdrv, and you'll be good.
