I have a back pack cdrw.. and the power cord is messed up.... does anyone know if those traditionaly are ide drives with a converter built into the back of tthe external case?
or if they are parralell through and through

Don't know about yours, but my old Hewlett-Packard parallel-port CDRW was an IDE drive with a separate converter in the back of the external case.

The Microsolution Backpack that I have has a Mitsumi IDE CDRW inside the case. I had removed it from the case and installed into the PC. Windows recognized it, so did the burning software. Works great in the PC even if it's several years old.

Depends on how old your drive is. Early ones were SCSI with a parallel to SCSI converter. Most recent ones are IDE with converter.
