Ottawa killer's parents apologize for 'pain, fright, chaos’

The parents of Michael Zehaf-Bibeau, 32, who shot and killed Cpl. Nathan Cirillo at point-blank range Wednesday at the National War Memorial in Ottawa, released this statement to The Associated Press.

Susan Bibeau, his mother, is a deputy chair of the Immigration and Refugee Board in Ottawa. Bulgasem Zehaf, his father, operated a café in the Montreal suburb of Laval.

“Hi, I am writing this note on behalf of my husband and myself.

No words can express the sadness we are feeling at this time. We are so sad that a man lost his life. He has lost everything and he leaves behind a family that must feel nothing but pain and sorrow. We send our deepest condolences to them although words seem pretty useless. We are both crying for them.

We also wish to apologize for all the pain, fright and chaos he created. We have no explanation to offer. I am mad at our son, I don't understand and part of me wants to hate him at this time.

You write that our son was vulnerable, we don't know, we (he) was lost and did not fit in. I his mother spoke with him last week over lunch, I had not seen him for over five years before that. So I have very little insight to offer.

We don't wish to be part of any media circus, we don't think it will add anything to the conversation. Please respect our privacy although many may not feel we deserve any . . . Once again we are so sorry.

Susan Bibeau and Bulgasem Zehaf

Bit surprised he was at work after wasting someone barely 24 hours earlier. TV said he never fired his weapon during his career as a cop?

So was I. You can tell in the video that he is emotional. No wonder.

That shooter was one door away from the conservative caucus and the prime minister. There is no way in hell that this should have happened.

Fascinating video of the event being released by the RCMP as I write this.

PM Harper touched on this really briefly in his opening remarks to Parliament today. They didn't want any wannabe terrorists to think they could suspend or affect the workings of the country for even one extra day with their actions. I approve of the middle-finger-esque gesture it implies.

That's not good... You're having someone go to work despite the fact that he's probably a nervous wreck having killed someone for the first time in his life, probably, to make things appear normal.

TV and regular news reports of shootings suggest that a cop involved in any shooting gets desk duty or paid lead immediately after the incident, along with psychiatric support and assessments.

I'm guessing he'll quietly get a lot of time off in the near future. But with things like this sometimes you need to suck it up and help the country as a whole make a symbolic gesture.

I'd have to say the reaction has been pretty dramatic all over has been a bit amazing, considering where it happened and things in the world in general.

Not being negative, but it seems to have raised a lot of eyebrows all over.

That's nuts. This makes the White House breach look tame in comparison.

They brought Cpl. Cirillo's body back to Hamilton this evening. Saw the motorcade on my way home. Lots of folks standing on their overpass showing their support. In my three years of reporting traffic, I've never quite seen anything like it.

Here's a quick video from my dashcam. This was in Mississauga. Huge crowd on the bridge. Motorcade was just passing.

Yes, I know the timestamp on the video is wrong. Battery in the camera died after it got left on.

Canadian Press version:

The gunman who charged into Parliament after shooting a Canadian Forces reservist was struck by nearly a dozen bullets from security officers and finally was brought down by Sergeant-at-Arms Kevin Vickers.

http://www.thestar.com/news/canada/...s_from_security_forces_before_fatal_shot.html

Here's the CBC's "exclusive" version:

Vickers immediately ran behind the other side of the pillar. That put him an arm's-length away from Bibeau.

...

Vickers did not hesitate.

In one motion, sources told CBC News he dove to the floor around the pillar, at the feet of Bibeau, turning on his back as he landed and simultaneously firing his weapon upwards at Bibeau.

Bibeau was hit multiple times and fell to the ground. Vickers kept firing, emptying his entire magazine.

As soon as Bibeau dropped, the rest of the security team sprinted forward and opened fire.

Suspect at arms length, fell to the floor, but the rest of the people shooting didn't hit Vickers. I don't know, one sounds a bit more believable...
