Parking tickets

On what basis can you appeal a parking ticket? The reason I'm asking is cause I *may* have received a parking ticket today. And I say may, because my roommate told me there was a cop ticketting cars on my block today. I was unaware there was some city ordinance stating alternate side parking every other day, since I moved here fairly recently.

Ignorance is not a defense.

true enough, but having no posted signs or having this city law posted in a manner that is easily accessible isnt right either.

Usually a ticket has some language such as "pay up or contest". Select contest and write a letter explaining why you are contesting. Since it usually isn't worth the hassle of hearing a contest the city may drop it.
