Yet Another Parking Ticket Thread...

So, I bring my van up to campus late last night, park it in one of the many lots, go pack up some stuff, etc. I set my alarm for 5:30AM so I can get up and go buy a day-long parking pass so that I won't get ticketed when I am parking on campus.

I wake up at 5:30, go get my van, drive around for a bit... 6AM comes. I figure, I'll waste another 5, 10 minutes. Get to the parking gate nearest my dorm around 6:10AM (the gates all (should) open at 6AM), no one is there, reader board confirms it's closed. My first thought - well, someone is just really late to this gate today.

So I go to the main gate to the UW campus, where there are two gatehouses - no one is present, and both reader boards identify them as closed - it is 6:20AM by this point.

Being that it is finals week, the dorms are closing, I said "forget it", I have tried two of the main gatehouses, they were both closed - either they are holding weird hours this week, or something, but I can't get ticketed for parking on campus if none of the gatehouses were open so that I could buy a parking pass.

Well, obviously, I was wrong. I come out of my dorm to drop off a load of clothes in my van, yep, I got a ticket. 7:36AM.

The fine is not that big, $25. I am not complaining about getting a ticket because I parked in a parking area that required a campus parking permit that you can purchase from the gatehouses.

What I am curious about is if I have any recourse or action I can take on account of both gatehouses being closed and unmanned a full 20 minutes after their posted opening times. Thoughts on this?

Who issued the ticket? Campus police or regular city PD? Find out if you can appeal it. At least here in San Diego, you can write out an appeal and send it in to the division that handles parking tickets.

As far as I know, it was campus parking enforcement, it is a UW parking ticket (University of Washington Parking Violations).

I really doubt you'd be able to successfully appeal it. Just because the ticket dispenser is not available doesn't mean that anyone can freely park there.

<-- used to write tickets at UCD.

Could/should I write a letter along with the check I sent in complaining about the lack of mannage of the booths? That probably would not accomplish a thing, but it might let me vent a little bit.

If I were you, I'd appeal the ticket and carefully document the time and location of where you were, along with a reasonable story of how you tried to find an open ticket dispenser.

Holy double post, Batman! :D

Seriously though, I think that's your best chance of getting off with this one. If not, at least it's not more than $25...
