update: Settled at city clerk's office for $60. Everyone's happy. No need for court, city gets some of the money rather than risking losing in court. I don't get nailed with excessive surcharges. I guess it'll never be settled whether or not I can legally receive surcharges equal to 1000% (one thousand) of the original fines, without being personally presented with a ticket, or at least receiving certified notification through the mail..

I'm pretty sure I had seen someone post a site that'll help you "get out of" parking tickets.....

I just received a notice from the city with a list of about 10 tickets on it. Apparently, when my niece was living with us, she had gotten a bunch of parking tickets... I couldn't care less about the $5 or whatever the amount is, but after 10 days, it doubles, then after 30 days, there's a $50 surcharge....

Although the vehicle is registered to me... I don't see how they can charge me the extra $55 per ticket when I wasn't notified of the tickets in the first place...

(go after the niece? Yeah, right. We were nice enough to try to help her get through high school, but finally got rid of her after she dropped out (again). She's now 2000 miles away. There's no way we'd ever get a nickel out of her for these tickets.

Avoid means you don't get one in the first place. Getting out of one is different.

I think you are held liable for them as long as it's your car.

Go after the nieces parents.

Oh, I could easily prove that it wasn't I who was parking illegally as I work 15 miles away. All the tickets were during times when I was teaching.

I'm not sure if I'm liable for the tickets, since the vehicle is registered in my name.....

But, I can't see how I'd be liable to be fined an additional amount for late payment, since they didn't inform *me* of the initial ticket.

It depends on how far the judicial officials have their heads up their asses. You may be able to "sell out" the neice(sp?) to the judge and point out how there's no possible way you were driving.

Oh yes, in advance to the "suck it up and pay the fine, it's your fault" asshats: go F%$# yourselves.

Hey, thanks! One of them posted just before you.

I'd be happy to pay off the original tickets.... I really don't care about those fines....
It's the penalties that I care about.

Suppose you had some law that said you couldn't have your garbage cans sitting further than 1 foot from the curb. Your neighbors moved them farther away after while getting out of their car. Then, upon seeing YOU get a ticket for it, they removed the ticket so you wouldn't know. The ticket is only a few dollar.

Then, the neighbors get evicted and move 2000 miles away. Suddenly you get a letter in the mail, and you find out that your neighbors did that to you not once, but 10 times. And, there's over $500 in surcharges tacked on now for failure to pay within 7 days.

As far as I know if the car is in your name, then you'll probably have to pay for the tickets. The court probably doesn't care who was driving the car, but it was your car that was parked illegaly.

There is the "due process" part of the law though. If you didn't know about the tickets then you can hardly be expected to pay them on time. And unlike the situation with the ATOTers GF who moved and thusly missed a trial notification letter, you have been at the same residence and would have been able to get some kind of notification by mail. You received none. You cannot be held responsible for the neice(sp?)'s late charges, especially because she actively interferred with the delivery of the tickets.

If you get on the ball ASAMFP and start talking to the appropriate authorities you should be able to at least get the late fees dismissed, provided you can prove you were not driving at the time and make a convincing argument that you never got the tickets.

Thanks!

Update: Total = $60. Not a big deal to me.
Happily paid. No surcharges, etc. tacked on.
No court either, settled at city clerk's office.

Geez, and I'm fighting a $35 ticket for red zone, it's not the money man, it's the principal. See my thread.
