Hey,

I'm renting a house in Jamaica Plain and is located on bynner road. Problem is that while the road does not require a permit to park, I've heard that it gets pretty full.. Now, my car license plates as well as my license are from CT. Is there ample parking in the area for cars without the resident permits? Is it worth getting MA license plates as well as an MA license in order to
be eligible for a resident parking permit? Any ideas?

Thanks

the state law requires residents to register the vehicle in MA within 30 days of moving. i'm not sure, but your license might be good for a year. it's pretty unusual nowadays for streets to not require resident permits.

"Is there ample parking in the area for cars without the resident permits?"

hhahaaahahahaahahahaahaaahaahaaaa. excuse me, there likely is not.

your options are:
1. pay someone $200 per month, or more, for a backyard parking spot. gas stations will want at least $300.
2. register your car here, pay much more for insurance, get a resident sticker, and park on the street, directly in front of your house.

when the snow comes, it will bring with it all-out warfare. shovel out your spot, and mark it with your garbage barrel.

doh... I have a daytime parking slot at school so was hoping to park it there should there be a snow storm during the day... When is the best time to get a parking spot? Before 5 pm?

Thanks

my sister lives in JP, ive parked on the street eaisily whenever i visit

parking in JP on the street with no residential permit is 1000000x easier then it was/is in cambridge when i was living there

as for winter/snow/trashcans in spots, just move those its ILLEGAL to mark spots like that

I lived in JP.

Sell your car and ride a bike in warm weather and ride the T. Parking in JP can be nightmare, much like most of Boston.

It depends on where you're located, though. If there's a spot in front of you you should be able to get away with it, but where I lived, there was simply nowhere to park and the few cars on the street never moved.

Worst. Advice. Ever.

It might be illegal, but don't be surprised to find your windshield "accidentally" smashed.

A lot of people that I know have had windshields smashed or cars otherwise damaged after moving trash cans or whatever. Guess it depends on where you live.

Well if I don't need the car, I could always just leave it at my bro's house in CT. However, I figured it'd be nice to have one if I needed it on weekends to go back home or visit friends outside of Boston.. Its a pretty old car anyways so its not like I'd get much for it. I go to Northeastern Univ.

I also did the math and found that I'd pay as much on my parking spot at NU as I would if I took the T everyday so it all evens out in terms of cost.

Do the snow parking bans apply to the small streets or only to the main streets?

Also, out of curiosity, on streets like Parker Street in Mission Hill where "street cleaning" takes place twice a month, what happens if you dont take your car out? I remember seeing cars still parked there during the supposed "street cleaning" time..

Haha no, but I know a few people who do. I dunno, I know people all over the city and most don't really fuck with 'claimed' parking spaces. I live in West Roxbury, so I don't have this problem.

usually only the big streets. there will be signs posted

"Also, out of curiosity, on streets like Parker Street in Mission Hill where "street cleaning" takes place twice a month, what happens if you dont take your car out? I remember seeing cars still parked there during the supposed "street cleaning" time.."

a ticket is definate, and a tow is likely. the boot is rare in boston (kinda defeats the purpose of GTFO).

if you dick with someone's garbage barrel, prepare yourself for their revenge. if they catch you in the act, you will have a full-blown freak-out on your hands.

Doesn't have to be a barrel, could be a chair, milk crate, traffic cone...

true. markers should (and usually do) have the house number on them.

Parking in JP is a nightmare, more because of the limited number of spots than the requireing of a sticker. There are just so few lots and way too many narrow streets...

yes, it is illegal to mark a spot with cans and such. but crazies will and do smash and dent when you move the stuff they mark with. Its just the way annoying people are. Of course, in the deep of winter, when they take the time to shovel out the foot or five of snow, they like to claim the spot... The blame game gets thick I suppose.

Your best bet is really to not drive. Heath isn't far from JP really, and the 39 buss is always an option. It may be cheaper in the long run to just get a monthly T pass. Learn the Gren E line :)

oh gotcha. Yeah, the stories I hear about windshields matching always go back to southie. I myself am right next to southie in the south end.
