My wife and I are young parents. We have a 5yo daughter and a NB. It's time for kids to go to school. My daughter is ready for kindergarden. We live in a relatively good area of MD in a good school district. Other parents we know live in adjacent districts where their children are set to go.

There was a paper published recently about MSA scores. All of the scores are in the 90's. There are various differences with each school. Parents we know make a big deal about which school their kid is going to. "Oh they have this, oh they have that.". They sit around us and compare/compete about teachers/facilities etc. Some will even go as far as having someone forge a lease agreement to get their kid in another district. WTF?

Said parents should have done more research on district before moving there.

Which school, or school district, doesn't really matter at all. It is all up to the student wanting to learn.

I stopped attending public school at the end of sixth grade. I then attended church school for two years. I still managed to get into college and graduate. Any child that stays in school through the end of high school will have a better experience than I did, regardless of district.

I don't understand your question. This is normal parent behavior.

Is Church School like regular school, except you don't learn any Math, Science, or Sex Ed?

Yeah, because its not possible to buy a house well before having kids and be stuck in the area because of housing prices plummeting in the past few years.

I recently moved from NJ to FL. Going from the an area with the nation's best public schools to one of the worst (at least it seems that way). In New Jersey, the local high schools all sent 90+% of their graduates to college. Noone even discussed graduation rates as they were all very high. Around here, the BEST high school has around a 70% graduation rate and it scares the hell out of me. I have three private school tuitions to come up with now...

Coming from a public high school background, I don't understand the hype either. I've seen kids from no name public hs got into better college than kids from a prestigious hs. Though if you can afford to live in those school district it's fine, but too many parents struggle so hard just to get their kids into better school districts. To me it's not worth it. Parenting makes a bigger difference.

Recently moved to Virginia and was not impressed with public schools. In class we had a girl from Florida who did not know where the Equator is and did not know what the Tropic of Cancer or Capricorn are. She was 21 and in her third year of college. I dont know which state to hate first.

Smartest girl in my class (by far) was home schooled K-12. And amazingly, she was also the most mature and responsible, as well as the most sociable.

Go to your local parochial school and apply.

Are you ignorant or stupid? Public schools in Chicago compared to private schools in Chicago or public schools in select suburbs are insanely different.

If the parents cared about their kids, they would send them to Catholic school. ;)

I'm sure I knew where the Tropic of Capricorn was when I was 10 years old. And forgotten by the time I was 13.

If the kid is smart the teacher is irrelevant.

You mean if the teacher is too busy helping other kids keep up with the curriculum, the smart kid won't get bored? If he was in a better school system, the smarter kid could be taking more advanced classes and be challenged to unlock their full potential.

Move to Hawaii where we have one school district for the entire state. All public school are bad. We have the highest per capita private school attendance. I went to Kamehameha schools, the school with the largest endowment in the world. Obama graduated from a private school here (Punahou).

No parents here make a big deal about which public school their child goes to.

I guess I'm in the minority here. I'm very grateful that my parents made school district a priority when we moved when I was in 5th grade. Quality of public schools varies wildly, and while I'm sure I'd still be a smart kid no matter where I learned, there are some things I wouldn't have gotten. My school district put an emphasis on writing in middle and high school, and I have no doubt that I'm a much better writer because of it. Frankly, it's stunning how terrible some people are at writing, even intelligent folk.

Sorry i don't live in chicago. More specifically I'm talking about the bay area. A tiny old house in Cupertino costs close to 1 mil, while a similar house in the surrounding area of lesser school district may cost just half of that. But if you are talking about public schools in ghetto areas like East Palo Alto or Oakland then that's another story. Yeah maybe I'm stupid and ignorant because I came from a cheap public high school... dang just why aren't my parents rich!
