Parents went on trip to Athens, Greece: Haven't heard from them?

My parents left for Athens Greece last week. They were supposed to come back today and haven't shown up yet. I got one phone call from them when they arrived and haven't heard from them since, which is weird because my mom usually calls daily. I don't have their hotel phone # or the name of their hotel. Is there any way I can find out if something bad happened to them? Should I try calling the US Embassy in Athens, Greece?

I know this sounds like i'm overreacting, but my brother hasn't heard from them either. I'm starting to worry that maybe something bad has happened to them. Any ideas on what I can do?

That's the thing I don't have any information about what hotel they stayed at nor do I have the hotel phone number. If they don't show up today then I think I'll officially be worried.

did they have return tickets with today's date on them? if so, wait a day, they may just have missed a connecting flight and are too busy trying to find another flight to make a phone call. wait a day, if you don't hear from them by tomm night, i think you should call your local PD and then try calling the embassy. i'm not sure how the embassy + state dept work abroad, but surely let your local PD know. good luck.

I wish you the best. This is one of those lessons to always leave your info w. family or friends. Do you know which airline? You can contact the airline to see if they got on the flight.

Contact the Greek authorities if you do not hear from them soon...

Or perhaps you can try the US Embassy.

The US recently warned Americans in Greece to watch out! Lot of anti-American sentiment there from the Macedonia thing. But don't worry, I bet they're having too good of a time that they forgot about you.

Call the American Embassy in Greece. I'm sure they have experience in this kind of thing. (Seriously. I'm sure this type of thing happens often.)

Thanks a lot guys for the information. I wouldn't even be worried if wasn't for the fact that my parents ALWAYS call when they are out on vacation. Even if they are only an hour or two away, they always make sure to call. For them to go almost a week without calling is very strange, especially considering they are halfway across the globe. I seriously hope nothing bad has happened to them though because it's not just my parents that are gone it's my older brother and grandpa as well.

Well, perhaps they went on a cruise or took a trip to the countryside with limited telephone access.

Do you know if they rented a car? If so, call the car rental places and see if anything has been reported.

What Embassies and Consulates Can Do:U.S. embassies and consulates help to locate U.S. citizens overseas when relatives or friends are concerned about their welfare or need to notify them of emergencies at home. The Department of State and U.S. embassies and consulates abroad handle over 200,000 welfare and whereabouts inquiries a year.

How to Request a Welfare/Whereabouts Check: Welfare whereabouts requests may be directed to the appropriate office in the U.S. Department of State, Directorate of Overseas Citizens Services (CA/OCS).

For Missing and Sick Adults, Emergency Family Messages, and Child Abuse, Neglect, Abandonment or Exploitation cases, and child welfare in cases not/not involving parental child abduction or custody disputes, contact of the Office of American Citizens Services at (202) 647-5225/5226.

What Information to Have Available Before You Call: In order to assist us in locating the U.S. citizen abroad, it is helpful to have the following information available:

* Caller's full name, address, phone number and relationship
* Name of the Person abroad
* Date and place of birth of the person abroad
* Passport number (if known)
* Last known address and phone number; itinerary
* Reason for their travel/residence abroad (business, tourism, etc.)
* Date of last contact
* Other points of contact abroad (friends, business associates, hotel, etc.)
* If ill, where hospitalized and, if relevant to current hospitalization, the name and phone number of attending physician in the U.S.
* You may also be asked to provide a photo of the missing person
* It may also be useful for you to contact credit card companies, telephone companies, etc. to try to determine if the missing individual?s accounts have been used recently and where those transactions occurred.

For Emergency Family Messages also include:

* Nature of the emergency
* What you want the person told about the emergency
* Name, address and telephone number and relationship of person you wish subject to call after the emergency family message is relayed to them by the U.S. embassy or consulate.

How Will the U.S. Embassy or Consulate Try to Locate the Individual and Obtain Information About the Individual?s Welfare and Whereabouts?

Consular officers will use a variety of methods to locate and confirm the welfare of the missing person, including, but not limited to ?

* Using the information you provide to try to locate the person.
* Checking with local immigration and police officials if possible.
* Checking local hotels, youth hostels and other places where foreigners (U.S. citizens) are known to stay or visit.
* Checking local hospitals, jails, and, if appropriate, local morgues. (Note: In countries where a consular treaty is in force, local authorities have certain obligations to inform the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate of the arrest, injury, hospitalization, or death of a U.S. citizen. See Consular Access and Notification.)

Was someone supposed to pick them up from the airport? If so, then you probably could figure out which plane they were schedule to come on, and try to see if the airline knows if they go on. That's where I would start.

Ok update guys. I just remembered that they all were planning on running in the 2004 Athens Marathon and 10k. I checked it out on the web, and the event was held yesterday the 7th. I checked the results of the 10k and the marathon and they all participated and finished in their respective events. I feel very relieved to know that they are most likely alive and well, and are prob. on the plane flight home.

Thank god they are OK... It's easy to allow irrational thoughts of death or worst case scenarios after you have already been through some hardship in life.

Congrats on returning to a normal state of mind :beer:

Yea thanks a lot bumrush. I'm normally a level-headed guy, but the thought of losing my parents and family is just devastating to me and I literally was freaking out. Good thing I remembered that they were planning on doing the run, that saved me a lot of unnecessary worrying.

I just saw another post about Greece and wondered whatever happened to this one. Glad to hear they're ok (assuming they made it home alright).

I believe this was resolved - in the middle of the thread he says that his parents ran in the Athenian Marathon or 10k or something and they both finished so they're both probably OK.

:Q at the prospect of running 10K with the air quality in Athens.

You might as well smoke cigarettes while running some days.
