OMG I didn't realize the previous Camry LE (or similar) was that weak.

Skoorb summed it up best.

Personally I laugh as most do when people Rice-out there family sedans. A camry is a great car no doubt but riced out you'll be a butt of jokes driving down the street IMHO...
That's true too. Beyond the obvious fact that it's a waste of money people DO laugh when people drive down the street in their cars. When people turn their head to see a car with a bunch of extra plastic blaring base and shaking the doors off they aren't looking over to see how cool it is - they're looking over to check out the sleeze ball in the car. A not uncommon reaction is to laugh and shake one's head while sharing knowing glances with a friend.

Of course if you don't care what other people think what I wrote above is irrelevant to you. But then if you didn't care what people think you wouldn't be ricing it out in the first place.

And yes modded exhausts fall under this category of so-called "vanity" that illicits sympathy looks from the general public.

And what if the modded exhaust is a necessity...like when the car has a turbo installed. Stock one inch piping isn't gonna cut it for a turbo'd car. Even a slightly modded car can gain performance from them.. You have the right amount of air/fuel flowing in that modded exhaust can help your car go fast.

Yes but then we're back to the fact that a person shouldn't be doing this on a camry anyway. Doing nothing to a car stock than throwing a new exhaust on just sounds silly.

Hey guys, don't forget about the quality interiors they put in those Toyotas! And hey, with 17" rims and suspension work, it could handle pretty well in the twisties, too...

If a car is turbo'd then it's actually got some merit to the mods. Putting a $1000 exhaust on an N/A 2.2l 4 cylinder that puts out a pathetic 130 HP does nothing other than leaving you $1000 poorer. So you gain 5 HP. Whoopdeefrickendoo. You'll never notice it because the auto slushbox sitting between the engine and the wheels sucks up 20% of your power.

If you are going to mod a car, do it on something that will actually benefit from it.

i'd have to agree w/ everyone here, don't bother putting too much into that other than maybe a new stereo system :) if you're gunna get bigger wheels, don't go all the way to 17... it just doesn't look right. Not to mention you won't have the hp to back it up ;)

just drive it for however long you have.. you're lucky to get a nice reliable car.

camry's are not mod-friendly cars.

they are more of a quiet low down luxury sedan.

i think you should either keep it that way...
or get a new car... one that fits you better.

if i were you, i'd keep the car as is.

I agree, spend the money on a new head unit, speakers, amp(s), and sub(s) if your Camry is still with factory components.

The factory head unit in our camry was adequate for most musics, and had a provision for a cd changer. I got an adapter from crutchfield, and installed a pioneer 8 cd changer for less than 250$. now if some thief looks in, all he sees is the factory radio, he is not breaking into a car for that;)

Don't do that. Don't be the guy at college with the souped up Camry. Seriously.

Just say no. That's a very bad idea for two reasons:

1) Considering what car it is you throw a bunch of money in and get back comparitively little performance.
2) Total and utter waste of money.

Agreed. Please save yourself from being the ass of many "look at that piece of crap" statements later and stay stock.

Btw, never EVER EVER EVER take a camry up to the twisties. a guy i know did it once, even had a passenger too

when they were done he was :Q

the passenger was :Q:Q:Q

Personally, I laugh when people make blatant grammatical errors like you just did.

Jesus, you mention camry and mod and all of a sudden I'm being attacked. You need to read all of what I write. Some modding can be tasteful, which is the kind I said I was referring to. You were so willing to tear into my plans for the car. Maybe you need to realize that there are options beyond those you would see here. Regardless, my questions were answered. There is nothing that I can do to bring about a noticible performance increase short of turbo, which is something I said I didn't want. Thanks to all who reponded intelligently and helpfully.

My parents got a '01 Camry 4 banger with a 5-speed and I FAR prefer my 91 Accord with 5-speed. IMHO, the Toyota isn't nearly as smooth as doesn't feel as strong, even though it is rated slightly higher. If you want to do something with the car, why not fix the fact that it rides like a boat. You're not going to make it noticeably faster just because there's not many options for that 4 banger. You can certainly make the car look better and drive better, but drive != speed in this case.

Though you shouldn't turn around and sell the car to get something that can be more easily modified, it is certainly something you should think about. Maybe you can discuss the issue with your parents. Might turn out that they're not completely against the idea of getting a late model Integra or Civic.

But in the final analysis, it would seem in your best interests to not drop too much dough into a car that doesn't have huge potential.

Riced (insert any car name here) = st00pid as hell

Some "rice" can look 1/2 way decent. Aftermarket rims can be a good thing, window tint is usually good, lowering can be good if done right (and moderately), and I'm somewhat fond of the badgeless look.

But spoilers, ground effects, ridiculous lowering, stickers, 5-point harnesses in economobiles, large aftermarket tachometers, retarded fog lights, etc...

People who do such things should be shot.

Viper GTS
Heh a guy I know has a focus with bucket seats and a 5 point harness, I figure if he drives it like that for too long he will be shot lol.

If you had the money and weren't strapped down by financial burdens such as Uni-tuiton payment...I would suggest that you 'sleeper-ize' the Camry. Find out if TRD has a custom turbocharger kit or supercharger kit for your Camry...if so..put it on. Then perform other mods such as intake/exhaust/etc.. whatever to maximize the power out of the turbo/sc kit.

Then lower a little, get stiffer shocks, strut bars, rims with sticky tires, and most importantly a bigger brake it!!

Now do all this without adding any stickers/mods to the exterior of the car (apart from rims). You will have a true sleeper. Who would have thought a Camry could be that fast?

However to do all this you need two things:
1) money and lots of it
2) a love for cars and modding cars (this is the most important)...people who say 'why are you doing this to a Camry?' just don't get it! You do it to a Camry cause no one else has! You do it to prove that it can be done!

People used to say that to Maxima owners..then one day one guy started running 12s in his Maxima. More people did it. There's a 1st gen Maxima/810 running 11s!! Now that's a true sleeper! Now you have tons of Maximas running 13s all around the States/Canada.

It's all about the love for cars...doesn't matter what kind of car it is..

I do realize that this had nothing to do with the original poster since he probably cant' afford any of it. This was just a message to those who said why mod a Camry...why shouldn't you mod one? Why shouldn't you mod anything? If you can make a Yugo run 11s...more power to you!!
