Parents are looking at 90-95ish Ford Explorers any problems to look out for?

Rightnow they are looking at a 92 eddie bauer with 140k for $5000 and a 93 xlt with 108k for $5700. Both have a 4.0l auto and 4wd. The vehicle will see around 5k-7k and will be kept for around 5 years so something that last for 250k+ isn't super important but I would like to make sure there are no major common engine or trans problems with these. They also have been looking at jeep cherokees around the same year and money.

BTW I don't like suv and have been trying to steer them towards a car or minivan but mom seems to think she needs 4wd for the 2 weeks a year we get snow 🙂.

You are better off going with a newer used. Much cheaper in the long run... believe me :Q Get a 98 or so, with around 20k miles.

Good luck getting something with 140k miles to last 5 years. Its already worn out. Plus add repair parts... just not worth it, unless you do all the repairs yourself. My 86 S-10 cost me more in parts and labor per month than my 98 Ford Ranger XLT Extended Cab 4X4 cost per month to make payments.

dude, at 140K miles, the truck is cooked.
My friend just bought a 92 Explorer XLT (last year) with around 125K, and he has had nothing but problems with it.
He has poured over 3K for repairs... He bought it for 6K.

Repairs (This year!!!!)

New Tires
Engine Head Gaskets blown... engine was consuming antifreeze
All New Ball Joints - they all needed replacement
Alignment Problems
Pinging engine with 87 octane fuel... he has to use 91 or better.. needs tune up.
New Starter
New Battery
Power Steering pump needs replacement.

I think thats it!

We are a family that keeps cars forever and usually don't have too many problems getting 200k+ out of them so the 140k miles really doesn't bother us. The car we are getting rid off is a 93 taurus with 205k that we have had for 7 years. They can only afford to spend around $5000 because my dads 96 t-bird has 230k on it and will probably need replaced next year and he wants something he can pay off quik so he doesn't have to make 2 car payments, so no 98ish vehicles. He puts atleast 40k a year on a car my mom only puts a little over 5k.

I apologize in advance. 🙂

In response to your question "is there any problems..." here's my response...

...Firestone tires. You don't want to get a blow out on the freeway, no do yah? 😉

hehehe I asked my parents about the tires and neither had firestone 🙂

I could do most of those repairs myself I probably wouldn't though 🙂 but the only one that should cost a lot out of those is the head gasket. The rest just sound like normal wear and tear.

Well, the ford explorer was given only 2 stars in the recent rollover tests done by the same agency that tests vehical safty (I forget the name). Jeep Cherokees were in the same rating group. I just dont like riding in a jeep, every time it takes a corner, I feel like we're gonna roll over. I believe the major problem with the firestone tires is that they would blow out, and that would in turn, cause a rollover accident.

The AOD trans is exactly what I am worried about. I know ford has had problems in the past with aod transmissions mainly with the taurus. I think our taurus probably holds the record for most miles on the original trans at 203k but that thing has been dieing now for about 40k miles 🙂. I haven't heard anything bad about the one in the explorer but I haven't ever ask before either.

<< dude, at 140K miles, the truck is cooked. >>

yeah, that's the truth. They are dumping the cars while it's still driveable.

140k doesn't sound to high when if I average the Miles on the 5 vehicles we curently have I come up with 193k. Out of the 5 cars we have only 2 have less that 200k one is my beater 81 plymouth horizan at 191k and the 93 nissian truck I just bought at 105k is the other. The taurus is the only one that has any real mechanical problems. I offered to let her have my Horizan for free but for some reason she doesn't want it 🙂.

The transmission in those Explorers should be the A4LD, not the AOD. It's still no great prize, however.

I'd hesitate to get a vehicle with that many miles on it. It really only has a few good years left, if that.

I expect to get a ton of miles out of my '97 Ranger 4x4. I'll probably do an engine swap when/if the 4.0 dies.

i think you are thinking just b/c the other 2 fords you have have 200k+ another should last that long...that iS NOT TRUE!!!

Most SUVs are dead tired after 100k, which is the reason they are sooo cheap...your good luck with the other cars should NOT give you a false sense of security!

Any car we have bought with over 100k costs between 100-200/mo in repairs which crop up...
