Parents almost kill their toddler by forcing a Vegan diet.

This is just sick. People who think that it is healthy not eating anything coming from animals are only fooling themselves.

I would kick the father in the balls but I don't want to be accused of not being properly tolerant of their lifestyle.

If those animals were hungry enough, and if they had the chance, they sure as HELL would eat you.

They wouldn't even give it the mother's milk?

Oh god, what unbelievably stupid people. Denying a baby breast milk or formula? What the f*ck is that all about? I mean, it's technically a dairy product, but that's what those glands were for the last I checked.

This is an extreme example of why a vegan diet doesn't work for most people. They're all fired up about being kind to animals and know next to nothing about nutrition. It can be done (for an adult that is...a newborn is a whole different ball of wax), but you have to really be cogniscent of what you're eating to make sure you don't end up with deficiencies.

Sheesh.

From the article:
"The Swintons have been allowed supervised visits with their daughter ? but ACS has asked that a judge order them stopped after the father said he thought the child was getting "chubby," sources said."

Well, the father does have a point, I mean, who ever heard of a chubby baby?

1) Those people are psychotic.

2) Here's my question: If we as a species evolved to have a desire to eat meat and the capability to process it, then how on earth is eating meat "not natural"?

Those people are nuts. Being vegan is fine in and of itself. Thier application of it is nuts. I am sure if they had been sensible and consulted with a doctor about appropriate/nutritionally sufficient substitutes for non-vegan food such as soy milk the kid would have been fine. Feeding it ground nuts and cod liver oil is just not right.

So do they call their toddler Ice Ice Baby?

I can understand them not wanting to give the child cow's milk, but denying the kid breast feeding is stupid. That is what nature intended. Hope they take the kid away.

It is natural, it's just that some people get so wrapped up in the other issues with being a vegetarian that they come to view it as distasteful and thus "not natural".

Humans are omnivores. IIRC we actually subsist best on a diet similar to what our ancestors ate: whole grains, fruits, vegetables and a little lean meat thrown in here and there (whenever they could catch it;)). It's eating McDonalds, cane sugar, and all the other processed sh*t we're so fond of that is technically "not natural".

How else would you explain the rise of heart disease, Type 2 (adult onset) diabetes, obesity, etc? Obviously there are factors like stress and inactivity, but our modern crap diet isn't helping.

This has nothing to do with raising a baby by vegetarian parents. Many healthy babies are raised by vegan parents . . . BUT - This is also the very first time I have ever heard of a mother denying her baby her own milk.

These people are just stupid.

EDIT: They fed the baby cod-liver oil. That is pretty inconsistant with vegan ideal and also dangerous to a infant in high dosages. These people are EXTREME. Mother's milk is the most ideal food for the infant. All the vegans I know believe very strongly in mother's milk for their own baby.

What the hell is wrong with those people? Don't they realize that babies need the nutrients from things like breast milk and formula?

And how could they deny the baby breast milk? It is not made from an animal, it is made by the mother for the express purpose of feeding the baby. It is the best think a baby could have.

Also, I doubt either of the parents were raised from birth as Vegans. Therefore, I can't see how they could possibly think that a child should be fine being denied all the nutrients it needs.

Those people are just plain sick, and need counseling badly.

i agree. this isn't so much an issue of veganism as it is just straight malnutrition. i am vegan and i still get everything my body needs with just a little bit of supplements to my current diet. when i was a kid i never had cow or breast milk. i was just given soy milk because i was lactose intolerant, and i'm still alive. so being a vegan won't kill you unless you have no idea what you are doing. :)

Well, we, as a species, have evolved to do a lot of things. The most important human trait is our ability to have independant thought. I consider eating meat to be a desire that we are born with. Our ability to question that (among other things) is truly human. To be able to realize something and change the cards that evolution has dealt your species is an incredible phenomenon. Some of us choose not to eat meat because we realize that is not necessary for survival. Some go a step further and claim it to be more healthy. Those parents were obviously too involved with their vegan diets and humane activities than being good parents. I hope they realize how wrong they were in jail.

I had a friend try to do the same to her kid but luckily her husband loved juicy steaks as much as the rest of us so it didn't fly.

I would agree. They are liberal PETA funding tree huggers. You see, they get a lot of mileage in their f'ed up little world by saying the baby is raised this way. Have probably given speeches about it and wrote a book to.
The politics is whats imporntant, not the outcome.

I'm still waiting for the "they were just doing what they thought was right" person to show up.

Edited for crappy grammar

probably not a good idea since it would most likely get them very sick. it's possible that they could even die from it.

Well, obviously they were doing what they thought was right.

But that is no excuse for their extreme stupidity. And it is still no excuse for anyone else to bash other (read: "educated/reasonal/normal") vegans for their choices for themselves and their children.
