I was just approached by a golf buddy who has a 13 year old girl who has started surfing some porn sites. He isn't altogether happy about this, and would like to make it harder for her to surf wherever she likes on the internet. He does realize that she'll likely find some way around it, but wants her to know he knows, and that he can track what is going on. He has had a long talk with her, and 'lowered the boom' (his words) a couple of times already.

If anyone has experience with tracking/blocking software in a home setting, please describe them here.

My little brother discovered internet porn a few years ago (and we had to use magazines when we were kids dammit) so I found a free software called We-blocker. It works fine with XP and 2K but doesn't work with Firefox only IE http://we-blocker.com

There are other pay programs like cyber sitter or net nanny that are also pretty popular.

Tell him to have the birds and the bees talk with his daughter and be happy that she's looking at porn and not selling her body for trinkets at the mall. The are a lot bigger problems than kids looking at porn. (My parents would have been thrilled if that was all I was into at 13.)

Yeah, he realizes it, and has had the talk with her, but he still wants to have some control. Rather, I think it is more of the idea that he wants to think he has control, even if he knows, on some level, that she'll figure out how to bypass it.
