WINTHROP (CBS) — Medway-Ashland’s girls high school hockey team lost their appeal of their playoff loss Friday, after a parent was tossed from the game for aiming a laser pointer into the eyes of their goalie.

Winthrop beat Medway-Ashland 3-1 on Wednesday at Larsen Rink.
The score was tied 1-1 in the third period when the father of a Winthrop player was caught pointing the laser at the Medway-Ashland goalie.
It’s kind of like when you look at the sun and then you look away you see that spot and you can’t see for a couple of seconds. You shake your head and try to get it out of the system and just keep focusing, but it’s difficult,” Medway-Ashland goalie Kathryn Hamer told WBZ-TV.
Winthrop assistant superintendent Lisa Howard went into the stands and ordered the parent out of the arena.
Parents of the Medway-Ashland players asked that the third period be replayed.

Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association spokesman Paul Wetzel told WBZ the appeal was rejected Friday afternoon.

Macero said he may explore the possibility of criminal charges against the man.

Good.
If it was a green laser there's very little reaction time before damage is done.

Actually this is a common misconception with lasers. Actual energy reaching the retina is what determines if lasting damage is done. With a small laser (legal pointer output is <5 mW in US) blink reaction time to bright light is enough (or so it has been determined per FDA). Now that is VERY close to the pointer aperture where beam diameter is a few mm at most. At distance the beam is much larger due to divergence which on most DPSS (green) pens is 1-2 milliradians. From across a hockey field the beam would be 10cm or more. Even if this was a "hopped up" laser pointer of 100mW or even more the chance of permanent damage is still low (given the distance). At close range such a class IIIB device is extremely dangerous as the reflex time is too slow and eye damage is possible.

Now after all that is said, yes doing this at any outdoor event (aside from the morality of interfering with game - cheating) should not be tolerated at all. It's these kinds of things that will eventually bring about a laser ban for everyone.

From some of the local news stations covering this, this asshat dad had done it before and other teams have complained but the Winthrop team/coach of this parent's daughter didn't do anything til now b/c it was a playoff game and received so much attention.

Team should be forced to forfeit the game and allow the other team to stay in the playoffs.

NOoo!! not my lasers!

(I am serious, though--the idea of a laser ban sounds terrible, and also hilarious when you think about it. 😛)

Can't believe the losing team lost their appeal to replay the third period. That is completely ridiculous. Criminal charges are a must for this douche, and I hope that girl gets some good lawyers that can trump up some pseudo-crazy medical evidence (despite Ruby's very trustworthy claims) that she may suffer permanent damage and sue that douche.

I wonder if the father's daughter should also serve a suspension from sports activities for some time? Seems like the kind of message that needs to be sent, right? I mean, sucks for the kid--but it is entirely the fault of her dipshit of a father.

I'd probably beat the father's face in for even putting my daughter's eyes at remotely any risk; Class 1 laser or not.. Good thing I might never have children.

I film Jr. A hockey for the local cable station. It's amazing how wild some of the parents get. However, it's nothing compared to Jr. B lacrosse. Once saw a guy try to leap the boards so he could throw something at the ref. Worse still is when Six Nations comes to town.

The fvck is wrong with people?

People should deceide for themselves.
Unfortunatelly, humans are NOT most intelligent species on this planet...

And no spieces lived on this planet for more than 100,000 years.
100,000 years of lifespan of human species coming to an end...

Many may think that humans are intelligent, well, they aren't. And humanity going to THE CLIFF at big speed.

History will deceide - how intelligent humans are or were. NO ONE OF US....
