His past is a little confusing. The weapons charges from 2010, the items were not legal in NJ? This article says they were obtained legally, and he had engaged the state police on how to transport them, and was following the rules.

Fast forward to now, shooting someone who isn't attacking you is a big no no. The article is really light on details though, but it sounds pretty bad for this guy

Yes.

My point is that the GOP doesn't actually want to enforce laws that would keep guns out if the hands of bad people, thereby mashing that catch phrase ridiculous. Gun nuts wasn't the wild west.
