Paranoid sister, won't let me fix her computer

Just so you know the average computer is attacked within 4 minutes of coneecting to the internet. The pwnage would simply depend on who is doing the attacking.

Yeah, I think he's misquoting the studies that showed that unpatched Win XP machines were infected within 20 minutes.

In actuality, if he really knew quite a bit more than I do, I'm usually open to learning from him but because he is rusty I can't talk about EVERYTHING that is out there due to his out of dateness. He gives advice with out any research while I have to work like a dog doing all this research FOR HER just so she can disagree and say that, "he said this, he said that".
 
Tell your sister she is full of sh!t and that she shouldn't come to you for help on anything because she is a slut.

Especially if you don't have the blaster worm patch, I've seen my systems get blasterworm with in about an hour even when I'm going ot the MS website TO get the patches.... I now have CDs with most of the patches so it's not really a BIG issue.

It's also incredibly annoying when she try's to speek 1337 or act 1337. She litterally says, "pwned" and all that other garbage all the time but she doesn't understand that shes an idiot because she's never played CS and doesn't play any FPS games which makes her a poser.
 
If she doesn't want your help don't give it to her, save your time. If she complains about the way you fix it, tell her to ask her friend and don't help her. Don't bother with her computer problems at all.

If your that worried, route your internet connection via another system, apply QOS to it, then set the default gateway in the DHCP server to your new , traffic shaped gateway. As soon as her PC becomes active, it'll re-route into the traffic shaped gateway, giving p2p very low priority. And she wont know whats gone on.

I was thinking of that but I have netlimiter installed so connections are too much of a problem. But the thing that scares me most is she is too dumb to understand that half the crap she downloads could very well be viruses, and when norton DOES detect a virus she acts like it's an every day thing! I'm worried she will infect our network. I don't have any antivirus software on two on my computers because I'm smart, I've configured IE correctly and I don't download garbage like she does but if she gets a network virus and it screws up my two rocksolid stable systems I'll have a nervous BREAK DOWN!
 
I have computers at my parent's house and some in my dorm but the ones at my parent's house are the ones that matter to me because when I visit I want to be able to play games.

Then have the firewall ignore everything coming from her system and any other untrusted MAC ID's...and dont do it at IP address level, MAC level just incase the DHCP assigns a new IP to it.

And as for netlimiter, bollocks to that, you dont want to deal with every incoming connection.

An easy path would be to purchase a LinkSys WRT54G/S and use the sveasoft firmware with it, as it has some superb QOS features.

The more teadious (and I think more inefficient path) would be to use a linux based OS and use something like wondershaper or similar. Although I think that might be overkill unless it's going to do something more useful.

Edit: No antivirus , and still using IE makes you very dumb.
 
If you are really worried and cannot deny her a net connection, put her on a different class c. You can build a three NIC firewall box and let her go wild.
 
Tell her that if the problem ever gets worse, you'll have absolutely nothing to do with helping her.
