Paranoid schizophrenics...

I know someone who is telling me some crazy things. He thinks he's being followed and watched. He thinks people are putting some kind of knockout gas in his room at night and exposing him to radiation or doing other kinds of harm to him. He thinks they have secret passage ways in his house. He thinks this mobile home parked within view of his window contains high tech equipment that lets "them" control things in his house, and monitor him at ll times. He has started sleeping in his car. He thinks they are doing all kinds of crazy things like taking his belongings and putting them out of place.

I recently spent time with this friend to see what this was all about, and my impression was that he was misplacing things or not remembering where he left them exactly, and then blaming it on his pursuers.

I'm kind of shocked and not sure how to deal with this for now, but that is not my question. While I was visiting, I drove him to the hospital for an appointment to get an xray or ultrasound or something. We were late and had missed the appointment. He had been complaining that there was tingling sensation in his face, and extremities, and pain in his leg, where he thought they placed a radioactive device to poison him. After I left from my visit, I got a phone call and he told me that at the appointment they found a device that allowed someone to remotely track him in his leg.

I have seen this in movies before, and have heard about this kind of thing where people think aliens plant devices in their bodies, etc. My question is, is there usually some kind of explanation for finding foreign objects in a person's body? Now I wasn't there to see this object being found, so it could just be a piece of metal or something, and my friend claims it's a device for tracking. I really doubt that it's an electrical device capable of transmitting any signals. But anyways, yeah, what are possible explanations for finding things in your body, pieces of metal, or even something that looks like a chip?

I would like to see that medical report before believing they actually found something. This is beyond bizarre for the average young adult, which I'm assuming he is.

i lived with a dude like this. he thought people were living in the walls listening to him. my other roommate and I got him kicked out 'cus he was totally whacked.

me too.... in college, all kinds of wack things were going on with him. at times he thought he was living in lord of the rings world.. describing his surroundings detailed to the movie. really crazy. he didnt sleep at all. id keep your distance before he starts to think that 'they' is you or something equally crazy.

Ya, given everything you typed I wouldn't believe a word out of his mouth. It definitely sounds like schizophrenia, he really should see a professional and get on medication.

Yeah he's prolly mentally sick

Try asking him why does he think they go after him, out of 6 billion people he is somehow special? Or do people's lives are so boring they have to make up stuff so they'll believe they are special, and then soon start to believe their own bs..

I have asked and he gave a story that while improbable, is plausible. The cause for the people going after him may be true and all the other paranoid thoughts could be part of a sickness. It's hard to tell because I believe he is incorporating things happening in life around him into the crazy thoughts, and I believe it helps him reinforce the paranoia somehow. The cause for people going after him could also be completely fabricated, I can't talk about it here, and I have no way of verifying the story.

Once when I worked for Kirby, sold door to door, I encountered this this very strange man. When he opened the door, all of the ceiling was off with all the
wires exposed. He then told me the glasses I was wearing were antenna and the government was using them to track me. I ran.

I think there can be explanation for pieces of metal, on Penn & teller bs show they found that many doctors found strange objects in people's legs/etc, and a lot of them can be explained they were in some kind of accident and doctor didn't remove all pieces. Was he in any car accident/a fight by any chance? Hey I'm not saying that its impossible that his story is true, just saying its very unlikely 😛

You mentioned paranoid schizophrenia in the thread title, but I don't recall seeing it in the actual post; is your friend diagnosed with the condition?

If so, it's likely that whatever happened at the doctor's appointment did not result in the finding of any sort of tracking device. I'd almost be willing to bet that nothing was actually taken out of his leg, and if he didn't have records to prove it, could be convinced that he hadn't gone to the doctor at all.

Part of the delusional process is that existing information is taken, and then drastically distorted; it's what differentiates delusions from hallucinations. This is why what your friend says seems plausible, although very improbable.

What Whisper said...

I just want to suggest that you consider your own safety too. It sounds like he is seriously delusional, and I would worry that he may make some terrible choices based on perceptions that have no connection to reality. You might not want to be around him if he decides that you are part of the consiracy against him. Be careful.

Pull an SD card out of your ear and ask him to join you.

Sorry not to TC but that made me chuckle.

This sort of situation is very upsetting for the friends and family of the individual. See if you can talk to one of the doctors or get him to accept help.

I know someone who had an employee that was paranoid schizophrenic, I heard that he claimed that he was being followed so he took different routes to work every day. The last thing I heard about him was that he became a substitute teacher, now that's scary :Q

He hasn't been diagnosed, that was my own diagnosis based on the recent (which has only started in recent months btw) behavior. I could be completely off though, but SOMETHING is definitely not right in his head, that's for sure.

No, he hasn't been in any accidents or fights that would have caused metal to be in his thigh.

It's definitely not enough information for me to suggest a diagnosis, but I'd recommend he get in to speak with someone soon. Even if he's not a danger to others, there's always the possibility he's a danger to himself. Additionally, danger notwithstanding, as others have mentioned, the earlier he gets help, the better of he is.

Who cares? If the government wants to watch me fap to pictures of Kate Beckinsale then they can go right ahead.
