does anyone know how to make up a parallell cable to link two pcs for transfering files etc

Your are much better off purchasing a ready made cable.
Laplink cables can be had for $12 online.

But if you wish to attempt to make one yourself, here are the pinouts.

2 <-> 15
3 <-> 13
4 <-> 12
5 <-> 10
6 <-> 11

(meaning ex. Pin 2 from connector 1 goes to Pin 15 on connector 2)

Don't you mean a serial cable? Also, you can get usb cables to do this too.

You can use serial, parallel or USB to hook PCs together for file txfers. Personally, I prefer to use network cards and a crossover cable if t here is much data involved.
