parallel windows xp installation

I'm hoping someone will have some good ideas. Here's the problem: I was having a problem with win xp pro. I tried repairing the install, didn't work. It would just get caught up at the "Installing Windows...39 minutes left" part of the Setup. I eventually just bought a new hard drive, installed a fresh copy of xp. Now, the fresh copy works great. Here's the problem. Essentially I have a parallel Win XP setup, just on two drives. I should (I thought) be able to access the old drive and save the data on it I want. It's not corrupted so far that I can't access it. In fact, I can run programs off of it. However, when I try to transfer my files/folders from My Documents, it gives me an "Access is Denied" message. Any ideas? Anyone?
