Parallel port problem

I have been trying to get a Sony voice recorder to download to an older Toshiba laptop. It plugs in to the parallel port with an adaptor cable. I have all the software installed, and went into the bios and changed the port to be bi-directional. It still won't recognize the recorder. Any suggestions? I loaded all the stuff on a newer laptop, and everything runs smooth on it, so I know the recorder is working, and the software runs. Unfortunatly, the recorder belongs to the guy that has the Toshiba...

There are only 2 options I could find: ECP w/dma channel selection capability or Bidirectional. The book on the recorder says not to use ECP, it is unstable with the device. I tried both settings, neither one worked.
