I've been looking for software that would clone a Win 7 64 bit hard drive. By "clone," I mean create a fully functional copy drive, not an image file that could be restored to yet another drive.

First, I tried the free version of Paragon Backup & Recovery Ver. 10.1 which SAYS it should do it... but it didn't so I phoned the company to ask which of their products would do the job. The person I reached was nice enough to refer me to this giveaway for today, only.

Free download of a full version of Paragon Hard Drive Manager 9 from giveawayoftheday.com.

Limitations]: No WinPE RCD is included in this download. No free upgrade to Hard Disk Manager 2010 Suite is included. Registered users of Hard Disk Manager 2009 Special Edition will receive a Special Offer: 30% discount for HDM 2010 (if they agree to receive Special Offers)

That could be a problem because the System Requirements page says it's compatible with Win 7, but notes that it includes a free upgrade to version 10 for full Win 7 compatibility.

I called back, and the tech guy said this version will work for my limited purpose, and the new version would be out in a couple of weeks.

That part of the story is FYI for those who want to try it. If it suits your purposes, you can download both 32 and 64 bit versions free TODAY ONLY.

TIA to anyone having experience with this company and their products for any help and/or further info.

When you create a complete image file of your hard drive, it clones all the partions so wouldn't that be a perfect clone?

I have Acronis True Image and have used that to restore friends computers over the years, there is an option to clone the hard drive but I never really understood the difference between cloning a hard drive and backing up all the partions. When friends computers have crashed in the past, I just load up the last image I made of their computer and it restores everything.

Do you only have to "clone" when you want to switch to a new hard drive? What is the difference between backing up your partions and cloning?

Almost. I think what the OP is saying is that Acronis won't do a simple copy of one drive to another. It will make an image, and you can do what you want with the image, but it won't copy A to B directly.

Do you have to install it today to activate, or can you just download and activate later?

It MUST be installed today [before midnight PST?]. The free activation can only be done today -- or so it plainly repeats in several places....

I use Acronis at work all the time to do both cloning and backup image creation. it clones A --> B just fine.

I 2nd this, acronis does clones just fine. I've done it several times, and plan on doing it again this weekend. This is the free version from WD too.
