If I walk 5 mph in the opposite direction that a photon is moving, I am relatively going c + 5 mph.

I always thought that the original hypothesis (that any tampering of the past creates a new branch as a parallel universe), made the most sense. Relatively speaking, that is. Thus, when you change something, no matter how minute, you immediately create a new parallel universe. Of course, that also means that there's not much use in sending someone back in time, as they can never change anything that would affect the people who sent him. Assuming they could get back to their original universe, though, they could at least observe and bring back valuable information...

I believe that everything that could be done to the past has already happened. The past is already written. Therefore, although we may be able to travel back in time, all of the changes we will make to the past, in the future, has already happened. And if you try to change something in the past, you'll find out that the present reflects the changes you will make to the past in the future.
Anyway, this is my theory.

Actually you're not, your motion is governed by Special Relativity now. Time will slow down relative to the photon you are talking about, and distance will shrink.
I forget the equations now. Something like t0/sqrt(1-V^2/C^2)

that's a good one, paradox of universal self destruction.. and if you think about it, any ability to change the past would do just that, then create a new one in it's place.
