paradox publishing for obsidian

norseamd

Lifer
paradonx interactive has announced that they are going to publish for obsidian including pillars of eternity and other games going foward.

thoughts

I hope paradox has some patience with Obsidian since it seems most of they're prior downfalls could be blamed on asshole publishers forcing their stuff out unfinished. Could be a good match although not everything Paradox touches is gold.

Didn't they use EA? Since Origin, EA sales have been consitantly off, which means either people don't like Origin, or the games are worse then the previous games. Crysis 3 sold way less on PC then Crysis 2, Deadspace 3 way less then 2 (but DS3 is supposed to be bad, so that one is kinda going to happen anywhere). I thought i read even BF4, sold less then 3, in total numbers.. I dont think thats going to bother to many devs as the PC market is peanuts compared to the Console. But i would guess a RPG maker who built themselves on the PC market might care? Sounds like a move to get their games in a better market space.

my guess would be origin since that is the main reason i do not play any games from ea recently also

Both those games listed are markedly worse than their predecessors. In the case of Dead Space 3, downright unworthy of the series name.
I seriously doubt too many sales were lost because of Origin, and find it much more plausible that sales suffered due to a general mishandling and fatigue by many gamers of the IPs.

battlefield 4 is worse than battlefield 3?

I was speaking of Dead Space 3 and Crysis 3, hence why my post only mentioned those two games.

never played either of them or the earlier games. but with crysis that might be just as much the fault of crytek if not more. so cliche that as soon as they got interest for crysis that they made right for the consoles. as much as the setting is interesting ryse looks incredably dull

PI is usually very hands-off, which is both a good and a bad thing:
- The good: Developers get to make the game they envisioned without too much interference.
- The bad: Several projects had to be cancelled because developers couldn't make a quality product in time. Magna Mundi and very recently East vs. West, in both cases developers were very good modders, but didn't have any real 'big project' development experience, so the hands-off approach was detrimental since they were not good at handling a big project. This is not the case with Obsidian so I'm not worried.

I don't believe EA publishes sales numbers, so nobody will know for certain. The only data you can find is from retail B&M sales, which is hardly indicative of total numbers.

Similar situation with the game Salem.

Why do they even want a publisher? Just go the steam route.

So, another of the Kickstarter games decides to take on a publisher. It feel like they are selling out their backers.

So, a question, considering that the game is already funded, already setup to go on Steam and GOG, what is it that a publisher does for the developer?

I backed it, and don't feel sold out. Same with the InXile games.

" So, you are probably asking, why are we doing this? Obsidian is really good at making games. Everyone here is focused on that goal every day and we are heavily invested in our work. That said, Obsidian's focus is in creating games and not in marketing and distributing them. It takes a lot of time and effort to do those things properly - time and effort we want to use to make Eternity the best game it can be. We chose to partner with Paradox because they can help us with those things and really believe in PC games in particular. This lets us spend 100% of our time (and your money) towards making Eternity great. Every dollar you have given us will to go into making the game.

We have setup a FAQ on our forums that will go over any questions you may have about what this partnership means for Pillars of Eternity. Please take a look and let us know if you have any other questions. And now, on to the magic of the mob rulers! "

Doesn't bother me one bit; not only has paradox greatly improved their own games; for the most part they have been consumer friendly. If it had been ubi-soft or EA I would likely feel differently.

as of now not really a problem for me either. was just wondering what you guys thought about it
