Papst cooling fans

I notice Papst fans say, "assy in Hungary" on them. I could be wrong, but I seem to remember reading awhile back that Papst fans were made in Germany.

Am I simply mistaken, or is this another sitch like Panaflos where they used to be made in one country (Japan) but are now being made in another (China)? Anyone happen to know any info on this?

And as far as anyone knows, are Papst still considered to be top quality fans? Any complaints from anyone? (Aside from the fact they're said to be more expensive.)

They are still considered to be "top tier" fans. IDK about the HUN thing...1st I have heard about it. They are a German company. I have read over at SPCR that some of the later Papst's have been noisier than the older ones. Just some peoples perspective though, so I take it w/ a grain of sodium. Are you looking to purchase one/some?

Yeah, it was surprising to me as well. Here's a few links to show you what I mean:

This one says, "Made in Germany" in the first paragraph;

while in this picture, you can clearly see it says, "Assy in Hungary" on the hub label;

and at this site, scroll down to the bottom of the page. In the last sentence of the first paragraph, it states, "They come from Hungary."

And this one has me wondering why it's so cheap. $3.50 for a Papst? :confused: Either that's a typo, or the fans have been cheapened, or this is the find of the year. And if you click on the "larger picture" link, you can clearly see it says, "Assy in Hungary" on the hub label.

I saw one on another site somewhere -- and now I don't remember where it was -- that clearly said "Made in Germany" on the hub. And it was like $22 or something.

We may have another Panaflo-ish country-of-origin transformation on our hands. I hope not. Guess I need to head over to SPCR and see what those guys have to say. Like you though, I usually take subjective perspectives w/a grain of salt. Who knows what anonymous peoples' qualifications or motives might be. Heck, half the people in the Panaflo 'debate' say they're the same and the other half say the Chinaflos have a different pitch to them and are noisier. :roll:

I might be looking to purchase a few if I can be sure they're the high quality ones that have been held in high regard for years. I'm just in the 'info-gathering' stage right now. If they're now being manufactured elsewhere and have been 'cheapened' somehow, that would curtail my interest.

The Panaflo's are exactly the same technically, the only difference would be quality control. What was let out of China might not have been acceptable in Japan, this will probably change once quality control improves.

Regarding the cheap Papst; it dose seem pretty low but in theory a fan shouldn?t ever really cost more then $5.00-$7.00 regardless of where it was made. A fan is very simple device after all. There is a problem with that fan however; 3000 RPM is too high of a starting voltage. Even assuming it ran at 5v it would still be moving too much air to be considered extremely quiet.
