I have to write a research paper for my humanities class, on a law that I feel is unjust. I'm not really set on a topic though, and being the king of procrastination that I am, it is due tomorrow :p I was thinking of doing child curfew laws, I ran a quick search and it seems there are many sources I could use, you guys think this could make a good topic? Think I could scrape 1000 words out of it?

edit: Paper is done

because it is basically the government trying to take control of the parents' job. If a 17 year old wants to be out at 11pm in the week, why the hell shouldn't they be allowed to, if the parents are ok with it?

Good point, but a lot of parents aren't doing their jobs these days.

Show me the stats of youth committed crime and traffic deaths before AND after curfews were implemented.

Then get back to me on if it's "unjust" or not.

Go for the marijuana laws. Lots of people here evidently think these laws are unjust......:)

Forfeiture laws.

One of the worst cases I heard of was a guy that rented his aircraft to someone who then (unknown to the owner) used the plane to smuggle drugs.

He was caught and they took the plane.

The owner said that he had no knowledge of what the plane was to be used for. The cops agreed that NO he had broken NO laws. But the PLANE had. And they kept his plane. (His only livelihood....)

Ok, so set up a curfew for adults too, you'll see the same thing happen. Not everyone who is out at night is up to no good.

If I had to write about an unjust law, I'd go after gambling or prostitution.

Gambling is easy, since most states keep it illegal solely for the purpose of keeping competition away from their precious lotteries and heavily taxed river boats.

Prostitution will have more shock value. Just focus in on the same arguments the pro-choice abortion crowd uses-"my body, my choice", "forces the trade to go underground where it cannot be kept safe", etc.

heh thats nothing. i read about a case where a guy let his friend stay with him until he found a place to live. The friend then sold drugs to a undercover cop (whithout the owner of the house knowing). The police then took his house, cars and hit his bank account. It went to court for years and after all said and done the guy got his house back. but his lawyer fees were in the millions.

Look at the traffic accident and fatality rates of teens vs adults. You'll see a bit of a disparity.

You'll need a lot more than teenage angst to successfully argue curfew laws.

I would pick something else.

Of course not. But not everyone out at night is a perfect angel either.

In some smaller towns in the state of Arizona, it is illegal to wear suspenders.

I've done some preliminary research, and there is actually alot of material out there. Apparently the ACLU is all into this subject, and getting laws shut down around the country. Seems many were enacted mid-90's as a trend, because Clinton said he backed then, and since then they have lost much official support. The biggest problems people are having with it are
1) It infringes on a childs rights
2) It infringes on a parents rights
3) It is punishing the many for the deeds of the few

You'll need a lot more than teenage angst to successfully argue curfew laws.
That's such a stupid term. Do people who love to through it around even know what "angst" means? Its german, for fear. What am I afraid of?

In German it may mean fear, but we speak english and in english it means "a feeling of anxiety, apprehension, or insecurity."

The ACLU? Pffffft! The ACLU will support anything that will get it's name in the paper. They have helped support child molestors for Christ's sake!

Local townships devise and enforce their own ordinances, it's not a federal or even a state issue. Take it up with your city mayor if you have a problem. Bottom line is that most kids under the age of 18 have absolutely no be out wondering the streets after 12:00AM.

i think there are plenty of good reasons to get rid of curfews, other than teenage angst.

yea, anxiety or apprehension...ie, you are scared of something, ie fear. The english definition comes from the words german roots. Tell me again, what do I have apprehension for then?

The whole curfew thing has been done before.... why don't you do income taxes on people under the age of 18? They can't vote, why should they have to pay taxes?? No taxation without representation.

Yeah, well back when I was a kid, they were sending guys to NAM that couldn't vote either.

Luckly, THAT law has been changed.

There is a law in Kentucky it is illegal to beat your wife with anything greater in diameter than a broomstick handle.
