panning for precious metals

What is it about gold that allows you to pan for it on the earth's surface? Are there other precious metals that should act the same way? All we hear about is panning for regular gold and nothing else.? Just a noobie question.

gold has magical properties that allow it be paned, this is one reason it is so valuable due to the magic it posses.

I think because most metals don't show up naturally in pure form, like gold flakes or nuggets... usually they're refined from ore.

gold is more dense ( read: heavier) than most other things you find with it, and it occurs as gold in its natural state because of its reactivity. when panning you are just separating the stuff with respect to density.
