Also went hiking today. Weather was great, but a bit of cloud cover later in the day.

We had a light dusting. I was lucky enough to get the last loaf of bread and last gallon of milk!!!! I had to rush to the store and fight 4 250+ pound housewifes just to get it. I felt like a lone running back trying to break through the defensive line. But I made it and the milk and bread are mine.

No other store in the area that has milk and bread? Or were you being sarcastic and i just didn't get it?

Sarcasm coupled with reality would be the root of my post. I did go to the grocery today and it was slim pickings on the milk and bread with a light dusting of snow. No sarcasm on having to fight 4 behemoths for the milk and bread. It was brutal, good thing is they had lots of padding.

Bad thing is they bounced right up. Horror.

I haven't seen snow in 11 years and only 3 times in my entire life. Thank goodness for south Alabama.

You snortin' coke or something? It was 74 degrees here today and there was zero precipitation here last night and certainly no snow.

Does it even snow in San Diego?

Maybe once in the last 100 years...and it didn't stick.

south of the mason dixon line, they're all VERY soft.

Wow, how is Christmas without snow? That must be just weird. We've had one and only one here, it was completely abnormal. We had some scattered around a bit but grass was quite visible still. Just not the same at all. Guess you get used to it when you live in the south. Or do they have like fake snow? :p

I always laugh how people panic about snow though. It's not like it's harmful or anything. Here we all drive through 1 foot sometimes, nobody dies. Heck, I don't even have snow tires on my car and it's not really that hard. Anyone with half a brain can get around fine in 1-2 feet of snow, during a blizzard. Just because the speed limit says 110 does not mean you actually drive that, if it's not safe.

Heh, most of the US rarely, if ever, sees a white Christmas.

There's a 2% chance in Portland, OR... And we're at a fairly high latitude.

I think 1" + heavy snow coming down would get classes canceled when I lived in the Poughkeepsie area. Bastards would stretch the snow delays up till the very last minute before declaring a snow day. I really don't remember any major accidents either...

Here in DFW they freak out when it does snow. A light dusting -> cars slow to a crawl on the interstate. Plus there are all sorts of idiotic accidents.

Poughkeepsie is not Western NY!

Here (near Boston), the news cuts in, "ZOMG DUSTING OF SNOW!!!"

Relax, I know it's the first time we're seeing snow this season, but jesus, these people act like they've never seen the stuff before.

Noooo really??!?

I always envied how much snow they got. Always on the news with the cars buried in snow - hell they like to show it on the news here. Bastards.

Give me a fvcking break!

Do you live in Oklahoma? I remember throwing things at the TV when they would break into the current programming constantly to update us on the extremely light snow, or even cold weather.

Live outside Buffalo. Went to Carnegie Tech in Pittsburgh. Even though it's only 200 miles south, they closed up when it snowed. Don't have the equipment to handle it. They laughed when I put my snow tires on the car over Thanksgiving weekend. We had maybe three inches overnight, usually I shovel this much, not worth firing up the snowblower, but some nice person plowed for me.

Another Western NYer here. Having some time in Columbia, SC, I laugh at how people can react to a single snowflake.

We haven't had any single "big" snow days here, but it's been adding up over the last week or so, got about 5 or 6 inches on my deck. The temp here is supposed to get up to 20 F, so I'll be wearing shorts today :)

Also, they haven't salted my street, but at least it's plowed.

Last time school was canceled for me......well when i was in school. It was my junior year of college. They had projected 8 inches and we woke up to like 12+ inchs. Despite being Michigan the university was thinking only 8 inches and didn't call in extra help. So since they were unable to finish plowing the parking lots/streets/walkways......they canceled classes :p

Apparently this stems from a weird rule that if they cant get the biggest 3 parking lots plowed in time they cancel class....totally weird

I love it when some moron calls the radio station and asks if any schools/buses are canceled due to the light snow that just started falling...

Timmins.

It's -26 today. We had a nice rainbow today, due to ice crystals. It's like a circle around the sun and the edges get really bright.

The coldest I've seen here is -50ish. Though think that was with the windchill, it was maybe -40 without. The wind is what makes the difference. it can be -35, no wind, and it's barely cold. Go outside shoveling and after 15 minutes the coat is off. With wind, forget it. I recall walking to school from home in -35, got there only to find out they cancelled. Diesel busses have a hard time starting so if they can't start em, school's out! Only part of school I miss, snow days.

Yesterday I was helping my wife's family move some furniture, (Torrance, CA) and a house across the street was having their annual Christmas party. For a mere $1700, they hire a company to come in and shred/slice/grind ten tons of ice into faux snow for their frontyard.

Edit: Yes, California (near LA). And yes, a well-to-do neighborhood.
