PANIC!!!! - bend pins on CPU :(

as stated in the subject.....my new CPU slipped out of my hand and fell on the table....three pins are bend......i managed to straighten them with tweezers but im afraid if its not damaged any other way from the shock of hitting the table......height was like 8 inches (20 cm)


why panic.........because its FX60 =(

Happens to quite a few people, most of the time it's fine as long as there are no pins broken off.

Solid state electronics are rather forgiving of physical impact for the most part.

Never had to straighten pins. Killed a HDD once by dropping it to the concrete.

One of the better tips I've read. Use a 0.5mm mechanical pencil to correct bent pins as
it will just slip over the pin and being long will indicated perpendicular.

Agree ... the pencil trick is probably safest .... you do not want to use a metal tweezer unless
you are properly grounded (for purposes of static damage to the chip) ... and it is very easy
with the pencil to detemine when the pin is straight again

Was it a boxed retail CPU? If so call AMD. Both Intel and AMD are fairly liberal with replacement RMA's in situations like these.

Don't worry about internal damge. CPU's can withstand much more shock then a simple drop.

That happened once to me a few years ago. It was a P3 1ghz and one pin actually broke off. I tried it anyway and it work with no problems. Dont know what the particular pin was for but I guess I wouldnt trust any floating point instructions!

It was probably a ground. You can loose a few of these and the chip will still work.

I've done this myself as have many others. They will be fine unless you break one off. Even then they still sometimes work.

Just dropped my friends P4 by flipping the mobo over and forgetting I had lifted the CPU latch. Bent 2 pins pretty badly... just used a credit card to line them back up. CPU works fine.

Just be careful reinserting into the socket... if there is resistance, check the alignment of the pins again.

I bent my pins before trying to install my xp90. I was latching no my heatsink when i remembered I forgot to latch the CPU down! Had severly bent pins. I used 2 knives as I was panicking. The cpu fits but doesn't slide in like before.

A friend of mine bent 15 pins on a P4 once and I bent them back for him and it works fine. It may not fall in the socket as easy but if they are straight enough you will have no problem. If a pin breaks you better hope its one of the ground pins. Will probably be a good idea to never remove the cpu ever again. Removing it and installing it many times may weaken one of the pins to eventually break.
