Not talking about homeless people or people who are hungry and need help, I mean the religious fuckers who wouldn't give a nickel to a starving homeless man trying to get me to fund their church. Why is panhandling bad when it's someone trying to get a meal so they can live but it's fine and the store has no problem with it when it's people with more money than me trying to guilt me into paying for their stupid pastor's new car? I was there today buying groceries, which already had me pissed seeing prices keep shooting up like a rocket every time I go, and some dude sent his kid over to solicit a donation and I told him I only give money to people who need it. So dystopian that in America if you're poor and ask someone to help you get a meal outside Walmart the cops will come and drag you off the property but it's fine if it's for something involving white people and church. I went to this church for a couple of months decades ago when I was a young and dumb HW Bush Republican and believed in the national religion of capitalism and it was the kind of prosperity gospel crap where if you're poor it's because you're stupid, lazy, and don't believe enough in jeebus.

tl;dr version -- don't go to fucking Walmart on a Sunday

Not just Walmart it's everywhere.

They make more money from handouts and begging than they do from food stamps.

Don't really have that choice where I'm at. It's either Walmart or HEB unless I want to go to luxury grocery stores like Whole Foods or Central Market, and right now Walmart has been price gouging slightly less than HEB.
I shop too much at Whole Foods and have Asian markets near by. Prices there are so so much better. I could live so cheep on rice and vegetables and fish, pork or chicken, and eat healthy too but to do it right I think I would need to shop every day. I still don't like being among the covid infected or feeling lost with lack of familiarity with so so many products. Prep work on Chinese style cooking is also time consuming. I have been eying tree trunk section chopping blocks on various websites and have a rather nice Chinese cleaver style knife. Also have several styles of woks but no wok burner stove. Wok he is probably carcinogenic but sure makes for a great taste. Sorry, I drifted off. Spent the morning watching Chinese chefs do their stuff.

I haven't seen any panhandling in the last 9 months. Nada, zero, zip, from anyone. Though I only get out once or twice a week.

My son has autism. He is 30 and lives with us and will always live with us. He (and we) are lucky that we have the means to take care of him and are trying to make sure that we leave enough to take care of him when we are gone. He cannot live on his own and would have absolutely no idea how to take of himself if he were homeless.

Now when I see a homeless person I see the signs on mental illness. I have changed my opinion from "get these people off the street" to seeing that we have a mental health problem and need to do more for the mentally ill people that come from families that do not have the means that we do.

(I will now step off my soapbox)

Edit: Oops, should have read OPs post, where he says he is not talking about homeless people.

I don't think we have religious panhandlers here, except for the Salvation Army at Christmas time.

But next time tell the kid his dad is a money changer. :smilingimp:

I contribute to them because I have personally seen how they are connected to real people in the streets. They are one of the few examples of a Christian organization that practices what it preaches, and they do the latter humbly.

You may have missed where he stated he wasn't referring to homeless folks, but the churches and other orgs asking for change with their little buckets (other than Salvation Army).

I'll give to SA because like @hal2kilo stated, they actually help the communities they're located in. And I'm far more likely to give to homeless on the street than I am some church asking for money.

99.9% of our charitable giving is local. SA included. The health department has a food box at the end of our street. The wife puts a full bag in on her way home from grocery shopping at least once a month.

She fills ~5 backpacks during the winter. Longjohns, socks, gloves, handwarmers, a few non-perishable snacks. Usually from Big Lots… She keeps them in the van and if she sees someone on the side of the road she’ll pass one out.

We spread these things out so it doesn't really impact us all at one time.

That's not really true now. In these days of late stage capitalism where housing is an investment instead of a shelter you see plenty of homelessness among the working poor, not just mentally ill people who can't hold down a job. Every city has Hoovervilles. Living in a van down by the river used to be considered down and out; now it's an aspirational goal for young people in the working class.

Yeah. I've never seen a religious panhandler in my life in New England. Steve lives in San Antonio, maybe things are different in Texas.

Even in Nebraska I never encountered this outside a Walmart, Target, or other major shopping location (outside of the seasonal Salvation Army bell-ringers). So yeah, I'm thinking maybe it's another stupid feature of Texas.

Seen em and panhandlers side by side at Walmart, Stop & shop, Target, Macys, Whole Foods, Keyfood.

Hell even seen them outside the subway station with the Catholic, Muslim, Hare Krishna costumes and pamplets of how they're supposed to save my soul.

I don't think I've ever seen a Hare Krishna out in the wild.
