I am a position to have either one for free (legally) either the Panda platnum antivirus or the AVG free edition, which one is better?

Well AVG is free and Panda Platinum is a pay version that has built-in firewall(in version 7)which you have to pay for regular suscriptions if you want to keep it up to date etc,so guess it depends on if you want a really free version like AVG or don`t mind paying for Panda subscriptions for your AV software.

I have used AVG for a few years and have been extremely happy with it's performance! I am now running 7.0 and wouldn't trade it for anything.

If you are unsure though, why not try both and see which one you are more comfortable with?

For what it's worth, Panda is respected and AVG is not in discussion forums relating to antivirus programs. That being said, there is no harm in trying both.

Hmmm?.........AVG not respected? Never heard that in any of the other forums I contribute to!

Well, I can't speak for the free version as I run Pro 7. But that seems to contradict what a lot of people think about AVG. Panda may indeed be a better program and I might choose it if I could get it for free. But the notion that AVG is not respected is pure BS!

One of the leading independent anti-virus reviewers in the world (who just got "best of the net" BTW), who test out of University Magdeburg-Germany also seems to disagree with your statement. Take a look here! In the wild virus tests (Damn link!!......follow the German prompt for the next page and hit one of the "next" boxes to see the results.)

Have you ever considered that some magazines (probably most) are financially motivated to give certain reviews? Just look at all those who sing praises for Norton/Symantec, when in reality those of us who know better avoid it like the plague?

Have a nice day!

No need to shoot the messenger as I was only relaying what others have said. If you like AVG, great. When I used the term "others", I was referring to users in av discussion groups, not magazines. Those folks normally suggest NOD32 from Australia and that product is never even reviewed here in the United States. Even among the freebies, AVG is not the top choice as Avast is favored by more people. As with anything on the internet, you must judge things on your own, but they seem to think AVG is a mediocre product.

Here's a review of Panda Titanium 2004

Here's a review of AVG AV 7.0 Pro

Here's a side by side comparison of the various tested antivirus software.

Panda seems to be garnering praises here, but almost everywhere else I read, I hear bad things about it.

Anyway I'm currently on Panda Titanium 2004 and it seems to be running fine. Other than the irritating popups and the buggy heuristic scanning options, I think its so far, so good.
