Panasonic Toughbooks

I'm surprised I haven't seen anything on these laptops here in the forums or in the AT articles and reviews. I don't know if any of you have had a chance to play with one of these yet. My company has been using them for a couple of years now for our service crews in their vehicles.
When they say tough they mean it too. These things take a beating like you wouldn't believe. The millitary also uses the Toughbook laptops for their field personal which is definitely a testament to the ruggedness. One thing they are not is the latest and greatest in hardware. I definitely wouldn't use one for a gaming machine. They use slower video cards, slower procs to help keep the prices reasonable since ruggedizing them is expensive. But if you want a laptop you can kick the crap out of that will still work great you need one of these. The higher end models are even water resistant. You can see some videos of the tests they run them through on Panasonics web site.

They're neat, but like you said, they harware is a bit behind. Also last time I looked, they were expensive. Most people looking at laptops are going to find price and performance more important than the ability to survive in a war zone.

Re: Military Toughbook Usage

As I'm sure Dan will jump in here and add 😉 USMC is switching to Thinkpads because their soliders were too rough on the Toughbooks and broke them a lot; they "baby" the Thinkpads a little more and the Thinkpads are lasting longer.....😉
